I recently purchased an XP-90c to go on my socket LGA775 Asus P5LD2-VM and I ended up getting abnormaly high temps. I noticed one of the corners had a big gap between the HS and CPU .So I went to go remount it and noticed one of the clips had the paint flaking off, plus it seemed much less dense. I reapplied it and tried to squeeze one end to create some tension but the clip snapped in two from very little pressure.

Ive tried contacting Thermalright twice, to get a replacement, but I havent heard back. I can do an RMA but dont realy want to waste that much time. Can anybody help me with an alternate mounting method?

I was thinking of bolting it but read that socket lga775s shouldnt be bolted, and I have absolutly no idea as how to go about it. If you can point me to a guide or a different method to search for, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Wow, sounds like you fudged that one.

Are you using the motherboard bracket that came with the XP-90c? If not, there is your problem right there. It sounds as if you are using the bracket that is on teh board, therefore it is elevated instead of strapped tightly like it should be.

The XP-90c mounts really easily. I had no issues with mine and my temps ar amazing. (In my sig if you want to see)

Im using the socket LGA775 retention bracket that I ordered seperatly. Ive installed dozens of heatsinks and I didnt think it was hard either but it does not have enough tension to hold it down. The brackets Im talking about are on the heatsink itself, one on each side. One is extremly thick and durable but the other one is flimsy and about as thick as thin sheet metal. With the paint flaking off and the bracket being so much thinner then the other, Im fairly certain I got a bad one that managed to make it past the quality control.

Wait..the bracket you are using is not teh one that came with the XP-90c? That could be teh problem. I'm not sure if they are compatible or not, but it doesn't sound it.

And, the XP-90c only mounts in one direction, how are you mounting it? Question 2) you did buy a fan for that HS and not just the HS right? Sorry if you think it is a dumb question, I just don't know how computer savy you are :D

Both of my socket 775 boards did not come with a back plate stock, the heatsinks mount by pushing some pins through the four holes on the board. Obviously this doesnt work with the XP-90c so you have to buy a special back plate in order to mount. The motherboard back plate and its mounting brackets are not an issue what so ever. The problem is one of the silver brackets on the XP-90c heatsink itself.

Hopefully Ive explained that a little better.

Because I mount the backplate I can get the XP-90c to mount in whatever direction I want. In only one position does it come in contact with board components and I made sure not to mount it that way. I am using a Nexus Real Silent fan on the heatsink. With the heatsink, 3 of the corners touch firmly but I could easily slide a quarter under the 4th. I could not get the flimsy side to hold the one corner flat. I tried changing the backplates orientation and taking the brackets of the heatsink itself to swap them to the oposite side. No matter what I did that sticking up corner kept following the flimsy bracket.

Pentium D 820@2.8 undervolted to 1.1875
Arcic Freezer 7 Pro 26C Idle 41C Load
XP90-C With 92mm Nexus, 92mm Panaflo High, Sunnon 120mmx38mm 100+CFM all resulted in 70C just opening the bios when the pc was first booted, I never tried to go any further because of the heat

Oh my, yes I see. Ok. That explains things better and now I know that YOU know what you are talking about :p

Ok, so to me like you just got a defect then. I thought it was the bracket, but now that things are cleared up I can obviously see that that is not it. Ok so, keep trying Thermalright and see if you can get a replacement. RMA is way expensive for a simple item like that. Try to get the freebie.

Now, on to alternate options for mounting. If you screw it down directly in the center of sides of teh HS where the holes would be if you took the mounting clips off, you would NOT get good contact. So that is out of the question. The only way I think you can get it to mount is to have that other clip on secure.

Post in the FS/FT forum and see if someone will just sell you that clip. The whole bar that goes accross the bottom. Most people are generous and might even give it to you free with shipping cost. Either way, it would be cheaper than RMA. It's too bad I still use my XP-90 or I would give you mine... Hm...

Well, try to get ahold of ThermalRIght. I'm sorry that this was now a waste of time because I didn't understand. If I run accross one of these clips, I'll let you know. Post back if Thermalright finally answers.
