Need Host / Collaborative Package... (Google v. KnowledgeTree v. ???) Thoughts?

Cliffs:
a) Need (pretty basic) shared hosting, thinking 1and1, TotalChoice, or (gasp) GoDaddy.
b) Need collaborative abilities featuring: share/show new messages between group members, have different "groups" as part of the whole, shared timelines (kinda like MS Project only more basic), and shared files (again, best if it allows different "groups" inside the main one).
c) KnowledgeTree v. Google Apps v. SharePoint?

Longer:
We're looking to put up a couple new sites, and need a platform for sharing timelines, data files, backups, etc., between sites (beyond the basic public "welcome to our homepage" stuff. Most stuff will be a couple word docs or publisher files and a couple PDF files. Nothing "hefty". Users should be able to get an email when a post/file/whatever has been made that applies to their group. Ideally people could just email it someplace like "[email protected]" and it'd post/spread it to the other people.

KnowledgeTree seems good, but maybe overkill, Google Apps looks like it may do the job, but it has no timeline features that I can find and I don't want to pay $50 a year per user for what will be a very light use, but larger (10+) amount of users...

Any advice recos will be welcome on this. If you need more information to clarify anything just ask. Thank you guys.
