ok, heres the deal. im upgrading from my 2200+ to a 3200 64. my question is, i dont play many games, occasionally i do, but i dont go over 1024.768 and i dont really care about AA. i can get a radeon 9800 pro locally for 200 and a stick of 512mb pc3200 for another 70, or should i stick to the 2 sticks of 256 pc2100 and get the 6800np? keep in mind its only for ocassional gaming, but i like my games to run smooth. losing a little quality is fine. but will having the faster memory, or faster card work better towards that end. by the way, i'll be playing doom 3.
 
I'd go with the 9800 pro and the PC3200 ram.

Maybe you could get the 6800nu and 2x256 of PC3200 (ddr400)
 
well, im pretty much limited to whats here in town. problem is, the video card and memory are coming form compusa, i have a 300 gift card for there, and 70 for the memory is the cheapest its getting. im hoping tho that the 9800 pro will be enough for the gmaing i do. which honestly is mostly just screwing around, im not an enthusiast when it comes to that. just need it to work.
 
Go with the memory. Having a faster overall computer will make everything go faster, thus making your entire experience better, whereas a faster videocard will only make your games faster.

BTW, does your board / chip have dual channel? It would make sense then to get 2x256 instead of 1x512.
 
no dual channel. from what ive read, 64 mobo';s dont have dual channel, maybe i read wrong. anyway, yeah, i figured with the lesser video card and faster memory, it'd be a better idea as i dont really play games much.
Just so i have an idea will doom 3 be at least playable with this card at 1024 no aa...medium settings, etc?

Um, actually I thought it was just the socket 754 motherboards that didn't support dual channel. The socket 939 motherboards do have support for dual channel.

...just my $0.02... :cool:
 
With either card Doom 3 should be playable, but the Nvidia card will have better performance. Doom 3 is more compatible with Nvidia cards.

I say get the new memory and the 9800 Pro. If you don't your slow (PC2100) memory will be limiting how fast your new CPU can "talk" with it.

Your current memory "speaks" at a rate of 266.
Your new CPU can "speak" up to a rate of 400.
The new PC3200 memory can also "speak" at a rate of 400.
 
yeah.. athlon 64 with pc2100= NO NO... but maybe you can get the 6800NU then save a few and grab the 512mb of pc3200 later on? since the 6800NU will eat the 9800pro alive.. and it even beats the x800pro in doom 3 a few times.. and you will have fun trying to unlock those 4 pipes hehe i'd say get the 6800NU then throw some ram later on.. sell your old ones or something
 
ok, so i got the 9800 pro and the faster memory. one problem tho, doom 3 runs great, but it keeps quitting for no reason. i'll be right in the middle of the game and it'll just shut down. computer stays on tho. its just like i exited the game. any ideas?
 
i would have got the 6800 since it is MUCH faster than a 9800.

you can always get more memory later.
