Alright well last night i was doing the usual, streaming media content over my network to my room to relax and catch up on tv content i haven't had the time to be home for, and that's all fine and dandy, until i try to access a particular folder and it gives me the error message "Foldername is not accessible- Access is Denied" . I copied the folder over to another HDD and im getting the same wierd file permissions in every file inside that folder. Is this corruption? A virus? I really have no idea what's goin on. I'm doing a virus scan and HDD error check scan on that hard drive, although im probably going to get more access errors. . PLEASE HELP ME!!! :confused: :( :confused:
 
1) Don't panic.

2) Don't run any tools/utilities that make file system changes (defragmenters, chkdsk, etc)

3) What "weird permissions" are on these files?
 
The folder is set to "read only", and as i said it gives "Access Denied" to every attempt to modify, use, or change the files and folders within in any way. I copied the entire hard drive over to see if the files are corrupt, they all copied over alright, and found not all files were affected, most of my *demos* and videos are locked though.
 
Just highlight the main folder and click properties then unselect the check box read only it will ask you do you want to include all the folders and files included within say yes and let it run its course it will let you access it again when done.
 
it doesnt, it gives access denied errors when trying to change permissions, if it was that simple i wouldn't have a problem. :rolleyes:
 
it's alright, i just really need some help with this fast, otherwise i'll have a great loss of data on my hand, im attempting to back up whatever I can, and writing down what i may need to re-acquire, but this could take weeks, and one or two trips to my local LAN for file shares. I just got a hundred pack of dvd's though, and im starting to make hard copies of everything bit by bit. Can't wait until BLU-RAY comes out with cheaper burners + dual layer discs. It would make this kind of backup a 5 or 6 disc job instead of the 100-200 DVD's im probably going to need. :rolleyes:
 
well both the server and htpc actually. i lost my xp home cd, so it was the only thing i had besides windows 98 :(

i don't have enough experience with mce to know all the ins and outs. i was hoping douglite might know.
