DOA videcard needs replacing.
athlon xp 2400
ECS k7s5a motherboard
Crucial 512 (2x) DDR pc2700
sb audigy 2
DVD drive
TDK CDRW 24/10/40x
old EIDE 80gig & 20gig HDDS

I am looking of replacing my current gaming system with something that Is little more up to par with current and up and coming games(Halflife 2 and doom3). I will build my system with parts from pricewatch.com. I am looking to spend no more than 250$ on videocard. I prefer to stay with AMD cpus aswell.

For your video card, the best buy for under $250 would probably be a RADEON 9800 Pro. I saw it on pricewatch for $245 for the 256MB version. If you're only looking for 128MB, it's even less. If you don't mind going a little over $250, pricewatch shows a GeForce 6800 for $274.

As for CPU, you've got a Socket A board (I think), so the best upgrade you'd be able to do without a new motherboard is to a 3200+. You're probably better off saving up for a bit and upgrading everything to Socket 939 later. Then again, if you NEED to upgrade your CPU, then by all means, do it.

umm u can get a 9800 pro on this board for about 140, don't get a 3200+ its a waste a 2500+ should be fine, u can easily overclock that to a 3200 and save some money in the process. OC'ing is not that hard too just ask around u can do it in about an hour or two. You Don"t need an audigy 2 unless your running 5.1 surround. Those IDE hard drives should be at least 7200rpm if not upgrade that. The Ram is ok but pc3200 is better and faster and u will need it if u do overclock and save 40 bucks. Also ECS sounds like a crappy name to me, try Abit, Asus, MSI, gigabyte they all make great boards for Socket A 462 cpu's.

personally i just suggest getting a socket 754 motherboard with something like an A64 3000+ [about $300 for the combo, give or take $20] and then get something like a GeForce 6600 GT for around $200 [they should be available in the coming month]

I think this is the best route so far. I am not going to purchase my upgrades for maybe another month or 2. I plan to purchase all my parts from Newegg.com when funds are available. For the most part I am really out the hardware loop and would look good suggests for a solid gaming box.

i'm looking at newegg for just customer reviews of the board and they don't seem that good. Does your board support ddr400 most of these socket a's don't and whats the difference in getting a good name like abit over a nominal company in ECS.

Here are few suggestions I have recieved.

NEC 8X Black Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive

EPoX "EP-8KDA3J" nForce3-250Gb Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754

MD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - Retail

Any other suggestions? How are these choices so far? What type of memory do I need?
