It's not the typical "it should be faster" thread.

I have a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB drive that started off fast, worked flawlessly and now, only 2 months later, and very suddenly, has slowed to a crawl. Opening programs sometimes takes minutes for something as simple as Firefox.

Anyone have any ideas? I obviously didn't bench with all three programs at the same time and I ended up aborting the AS SSD because it was taking forever and I'm on my way out.
I hope to have some ideas waiting for me when I get back.

Did you install RAPID? If so disable that to see if this fixes the problem.

Possibly a Sata port going out?
It could even be some software that has been configured for a drive on that port.
(Actually had that problem a while ago after the replacement motherboard did the same thing on the same port.)
 
Hey, you wouldn't happen to have one of the original Intel 6-series H67/P67 motherboards, would you? (This affected boards made by companies other than Intel.)

So, tell us exactly which motherboard you have. Model number, and revision number which should be printed on the board itself.
 
The board is older... It's a GIgabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P v1.0. AMD 790X chipset. Unfortunately, my 840evo is really bottlenecked by both the sata3 and the AMD chipset. I'm planning a move to an i5 platform soon (cheap and good enough for me). I just need to research intel chipsets and find what suits my needs in a best bang for the buck scenario.
 
Did you try something as simple as using a new SATA cable? My 840 Evo was getting all funky, boot times went from 15ish seconds to 30+, frequent BSODs that I at first attributed to overclocking, and I was getting crappy benchmarks like above (when they didn't hang completely)

On a hunch I swapped out the SATA cable that I think came from an ABIT AT8 32x mobo I bought in 2005 or 2006 with something I bought this decade. Problem solved. :)
