ok, here is my current system, No over clocking was done, due to lack of trust in myself

450w Raidmax PS
AMD athlon 64 x2 4600+
AsRock N61P-S, MB
4 GB ram (pc5300)
NVIDIA Geforce 8600GT

OS-Vista home 32bit

i was looking at maybe upgrading 1-2 things? but what 1-2 things would be my biggest upgrade? Would slight overclocking be worth it? And looking to be kinda cheap about it..

i would like to stay under 200.00, and i was thinking of upgrading to a AMD phenom triple core? 2.4ghz
 
So you think the board is ok? And I can just go get the triple core CPU and that be a pretty big upgrade? I would get a quad if I could find a am2+.

Another question, prolly silly but, if I get an AMD phenom x4 2.4ghz 125w CPU can I use my current heatsink fan and all from my current CPU? And with the new CPU being 125w , is that bad that it's that high? Would I need a ps upgrade? I'm not really sure how watts play into CPUs.

what Heatsink do you have?
btw, when you buy a new boxed CPU, you also get a stock Heatsink/Fan, so no problem there
 
Main thing I do with my computer is gaming, but nuthing hardcore, just a few mmos. And what is the problem with getting the phenom?
 
Ok so the board only supports 95w and lower, so I asume my x4 would b out of the question? So I would have to stick with the phenom x3?

So wait, according to that list... I can support am3!?!? With the bios update or whatever, but how do I bios update? Cause I'd much rather use am3 and get a phenom 2 quad core? And as long as the phenom 2 was under 125w I could keep my power supply?
 
Raidmax is a low quality power supply. I would replace it asap.

For processors you need 95w or lower, check asrocks website for flash details.

CPU list says "since bios" then had like v1.6 and all? Asuming I can't use those cores? And wanna stick to the cores that are am2+?
 
Ok so new ps and a processor that's am2+ and 95w or lower?

Only question still is the am3 that it lists on the supported CPU list?
 
The cpu linked in post #15 is am AM3, you need to flash to the latest bios for the mobo to support it.
 
And how would I go about flashing my bios to the latest version? Or would it be easier to say the heck with it and get a am2+ triple core?
 
1.Create a bootable system floppy disk.
2.Download an updated ASRock BIOS file (WinZip format with .zip file extension) from the web site, unzip the BIOS file and save both AFUDOS.EXE utility and BIOS file to the disk you created in step 1.
3.Boot from the disk you created in step 2.
4.At the "A:\" prompt, type AFUDOS, hit space bar once, and type BIOS file name then press <Enter>. For example: A:\AFUDOS ANF7R301 <Enter> then you will see a message "Please wait for BIOS loading ROM".
5.After 30 seconds, you will see the message "Program ended normally", then you have finished upgrading the BIOS.
6.After finishing upgrading the BIOS, please remove the floppy disk. Restart your system and press <F2> to enter the BIOS setup utility during boot up.
7.In Exit menu, please select "Load Default Settings" and press <Enter> to continue.
8.Select "Exit Saving Changes" and press <Enter> to exit the BIOS setup utility.
9.Now, system is booting up with new BIOS.

If you're ok with your system's gaming performance, your 8600GT should suffice. If not, find a used card for cheap. What games do you play?
