AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+
512MB RAM
51% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (405MB free)
Available space on drive C: 405MB of 9756MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 35173MB of 57241MB (FAT32)
(9 fans)
10 GB hard drive Seagate
60 Gb hard drive Maxtor
Burner
Dvd Drive

My problem is that occasionally a hard drive seems to audibly click off then the system crashes. I do not have any power saving features activated. My boot drive is drive C. I believe drive C is the problem drive. When I reboot Ctrl+Alt+DEl I get invalid system disk error on POST. So I turnde everything off then back on again. And the system disk error goes away. The Maxtor seems hotter to the touch than the Seagate so I recently turned on the 4 fans for C: and D: drives. It seems I have had this problem in the past when combing C: and D: drives together. But when C: is alone it seems it never has this problem. Does anyone know what might being giving this problem? Right now both drives are running fine with no crashes on either. I was thinking maybe my C: drive is beginning to crash and burn out. And showing signs of that maybe. Scandisk typically goes on but shows no errors. Thanks for reading.

Have you checked the Jumpers in the back when you combine the drives, make sure the master Slave For THE BRAND DRIVE is set correctly, Don't use the master/slave settings for the Maxtor for both drives, use different setting for each drive...

The Maxtor Settings for the Maxtor
Seagate for the Seagate

Also, download a drive utility and test the drives, see if anything is wrong...They should be available through Maxtor and seagate Respectivly...

I built the machine myself so I am thinking maybe it is my fault or something. I broke approx. 2-4 pins on the IDE port of the Maxtor 60 GB drive. It has still worked decent though.

I just passed all diagnostic tests for both drives. I have all drives set to cable select, which has never given me any trouble. Isn't it okay to leave them all at cable select? When I have changed from cable select in the past I just ran into problems during POST. Which is why I have stuck with cable select.

Well if you broke off the pins, that could be the cause of your problem, try setting the Master/Slave Jumpers Correctly, as I said, set them according to each Companies specs, don't use Maxtors specs for your Seagate...Etcetera, tell me what happens...

Currently I've got the Seagate Boot Drive as Master and Maxtor extra drive as Slave. And all seems fine just like that, meaning no errors on POST. However playing games will be the test I think. And I will let you know if I get clicking or not. As one or both seemed to be dying in Cable Select mode anyways. What about the Burner and Dvd are they fine in Cable Select mode you think? Currently this is my POST order. Primary Master: Burner ; Primary Slave: Dvd ; Secondary Master: Maxtor ; Secondary Slave: Seagate Boot Drive. This is now with Seagate Boot Drive as Master and Maxtor as Slave in the jumpers. So far everything is working great, I've tried quite a few of my games with no clicking.

The only 'specs' I have are the labels on the drives. And my jumper does it matter which way I turn the jumper on the pins, one jumper dropped now I can't tell if it is right side up or not. The seagate jumper dropped. The clicking happens during the time I play games. I know because I played half life demo this morning and that's when the clicking happened. However I got blue screen read/write error for drive D: my newer maxtor 60 GB. So now I'm unsure which drive has a problem. My clicking seems worse now, esp. and only in games or downloading at same time. When just doing normal pc use clicking does not happen ie. downloads, word processing and so on.
