need help with pfSense build

Hello all,

Trying to find the proper hardware for a small (1U would be great), quiet build for a pfSense install. Also going to be using the built-in SNORT package with pfSense so will be needing 4GB RAM.

Need 3+ ethernet ports, preferably 10/100/1000. The more ethernet ports the better. Budget around $600-$750.

Doesn't have to be the fastest or latest and greatest. Has to be quiet (going to be located in living room) and small due to space limitations. Space is approx 20" wide by 14" tall by 20" deep.

Thanks fr500. That looks like it would work just fine. Any recommendations on additional cases that may work with mobo?

Also, any recommendations for replacing the fan with a quieter model? Read a couple reviews on newegg about the fan being little noiser than expected. Found this one: ENERMAX UC-8EB 80mm Case Fan

Setup so far:

Jetway NF99FL-525
daughterboard with 3 Intel Gig-E adapters
Antec ISK300-65 (replacing fan with ENERMAX UC-8EB 80mm Case Fan)
Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT 500GB 7200 Hard Drive

Need some recommendations on RAM and a slimline CD/DVD drive please.

Would like to get good quality RAM to run SNORT on pfSense install.

Bear in mind you've gotta use so-dimms, that said there is no bad thing as bad RAM IMHO, I'd go for kingston. These are pretty fine for so-dimm

Slimline dvd, anything will do, I'm happy with my Silverstone SOD01. I'd replace the WD scorpio black for a small SSD, you shouldn't need that much space on a router/firewall/IPS

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate the help on this. Hate to keep asking questions, but what size and brand SSD drive you recommend? I know very little about the SSDs. I plan on running pfSense, Squid, Snort, and may add additional packages in the future as needed. Want to get something that will last a while.

If you're running a proxy you are better off with your mechanical HDD, might be a tad noisier, but I don't think an SSD is good for squid.

yes defanatly do a bit of research before you use an ssd. PFsense has a few threads about it, but the just of it is that it writes way to much to the ssd and it will stop working pretty fast, that being said you can load up one of there image files that do not do so much writing and runs everything in ram, might be worth looking at.
