Someone I work with offloaded an older Toshiba laptop to me. Seems to have a 1.5GHz Celeron, 512MB ram, and Intel 915GM. Model is M55-S135

They gave it to me thinking that the HDD was bad. They told me to keep it, but if it was that simple I would have returned it.

The HDD is bad, however, swapping in a good hard drive gives the same issues.

Issues are:

POST is fine.
When trying to load an OS, be it XP or Ubuntu, I get "CRC Error --System Halted"
I cannot run Ubuntu Live at all, and only 2 times I have been able to get through part of XP install where it's copying over the files. Then it just dies saying the files cannot be located.

I have reflashed to the latest BIOS from Toshiba's website. However, the flash seems to die at the end, resulting in a total shutdown of the machine. I do not see any "Completed" messages.

Ideas? Things to try?

Swapped out the cd drive with a dvd drive from my wife's Toshiba laptop. Booted live cd fine. will try install.

Can't boot from USB devices. Machine is that old.

That laptop was made around 2004 or 2005, yes? I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S821 from 2005 that has an awkward 'boot to USB' support. It won't explicitly state support from booting off USB devices unless a usb storage device is physically connected to the computer. Even then, you have to go into the BIOS and make sure it's the first boot device (it's usually hidden under +HDD) or it won't boot it regardless if you see it in the boot selection menu or not. Just thought I might throw that out there. :)

OTOH, I hope the drive swap from your wife's pc works out successfully.

It actually worked quite well. Ubuntu 9.04 rc installed no problems. Found all hardware and works great.

However, being who I am, I informed the original owner that it is working, and she is wanting it back. However, we have made an agreement. I buy the parts that she needs for it to be 100%, and I get some scratches on my car professionally fixed. :D Bartering FTW.

Thanks for the help guys. The ext cd drive suggestion put me on the right path.
