Ok I am going to go with a receiver and some speaker setup instead of buying the logitech z5500. I heard that I would get better sound by going this way. I will be using this system for gaming, movies, and music.
I listen to all kinds of music but mostly rap and country, if that helps any.

Right now I would like to get a 2.1 system with the option of having surround sound.
What I need is the receiver and speaker and a set of headphones

My budget I would say is $400-500

Right now I have a set of Klispch 4.1
And HD 212 Pro's

I saw the new Swan M10's they look nice for the money but I dont know if the new a receiver or not. I was also looking at the HD555's

Any suggestion are very much welcome. Lookin to get a idea about this before thursday so I can go about price hunting and ordering.

Let me see if I get this straight, you want to spend $500 on a 2.1 set?

You are correct I want it all for that much. Is that way too low?? This is my first time not just goin to pick up a set of computer speakers. So Im totally lost.

$400-500 is pretty minimal for receiver/speakers/headphones. I'm not a headphone user, but $100 can get you fairly decent ones, I believe. Check the posts here on brand/model.

Receivers: assuming new vs. used. $200 will get you a budget receiver with minimal frills. Would probably sound OK, but a receiver in the $300-400 range (new!) will produce better sound and have more features. You can spend WAY more than that, BTW. It all depends on your requirements.

Speakers: I suggest you put your money (short term) in the receiver and headphones. Hook up your existing speakers to this receiver. Get a cheap center channel off fleabay. Again, this is short term until you have addtional funds to upgrade the speakers.

I spent a little over $500 for the speakers, sub and amp in my sig. There are lots of ways to get excellent 2.1 sound for around $500 or even less. Good headphones will put you well over that price ceiling, though.

1. $100 will get you good headphones.
2. $200 vs $400 receivers.... I have not personally heard a difference in sound, atleast enough to make me say... "OK, I'll take the $400 receiver." It's too close to call. I'd stick with a cheapie for your budget and requirements.
3. You have about $200 left over for speakers, we can go with a pair of good Klipsch floorstanders on ebay. Enough bass to get you by without a sub for a little while.
4. If you don't get headphones, you can put that money towards a better speaker or a cheap $100 subwoofer.

For $100 you will get ok headphones, not good. Give 50-80 more and then good.

I am not sure why you want to spend all that money on a 2.1 system though, unless you plan to "upgrade" it in the future.

yeah i plan on getting more speakers in the future. Those are just for start. Ok I will say 500 for just the setup not including the headphones.

So any advice on what receiver?? I am will to spend 200 on the receiver and the rest on the speakers. I could prolly hook up my current speakers to the recevier. I really dont want to spend a ton on this setup. So 500 may be as high as I can go unless there is noticeable difference or a worthy part.

OP do some research on the panasonic XR55S, lots of happy owners. The amp has a good amount of features at it's pricepoint and can be had for around $160 shipped at overstock.com (google for the overstock.com coupon).

Here are a few other merchants that carry it: http://www.google.com/products?q=panasonic+sa-xr55s&btnG=Search&show=dd&scoring=r

Pair that up with the av123 X-LS bookshelfs and an av123 X-sub subwoofer and you're set. If you need a cheaper (but lower quality) sub, check out the daytons at partsexpress.

Dang im kinda waiting to see what the Swan M10's sound like. Wondering if they will sound better than my Klipsch 4.1. I mean i dont need the sub really any more cause I can never listen to it anyways without people complaining. I was tossing and turning tonight thinking of getting the M10's, HD555, Xfi Prelude, and Maybe a headphone amp. Dont know really confused.:rolleyes:

Hmmm this setup is interesting. May have to do a little research on it.

You'll find a crapload of info on those products, enough positive testimonies to make your eyes bleed :D.

Of course those products have also had un-satisfied owners, all products do. But overall they score high on the value rating.

Here's just one place that has a decent amount of info: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=88

These will blow away any computer multimedia speakers.

you can get a use onkyo tx305 for 99. it was a great buy but the one i got died about 5 months after i got it. still great for the money i just may have had bad luck. then some infinity primus 160's and an onyx x-sub. that $500 even.

Ok I did my research on the above setup and its nice but the Swan M10's are seeming very nice.
I realize the swan M10's are much less expensive and may punch above their weight, but they may not be a major upgrade over your current klipsch speakers. As an overall solution the X-LS + receiver + sub will sound much better, amongst some of the other choices mentioned.

It all depends on how much $ you are willing to spend, and the level of sound quality you are trying to achieve.

Good luck either way though and enjoy the new toys :)
