Need help with IDE

So I just bought a 300 gig Seagate because my Maxtor's SMART status is BAD. Now, the Maxtor is the slave and a Western Digital is the master. I tried to hookup my Seagate to the onboard secondary IDE controller but it won't work, and device manager says it cannot start.




It's worked before, I don't understand why it won't work now. I tried to just boot up regularly w/o anything plugged into the second IDE controller and it still gives me the same msg in device manager.

It's on the mobo itself.

My 2 primary drives (WD master and Maxtor slave) are on one controller, and i'm trying to add this 300 gig seagate to the second controller.
And yeah, I've had friends' drives on the second controller lots of times and it's worked fine.

I did try reinstalling drives for it but same response.

when i boot up my computer, it searches for an IDE drive on the second controller and actually even confirms that it has found one (it says 279gb drive etc. etc.).

Is it possible that you need to change some jumper settings in order to enable that controller?

Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc
Action > rescan disks > right click unallocated space for the disk in question > Partition and format


failing that
1. OS, Service Pack and Mobo?
2. check the jumpers make sure its not set to cable select (if the other drive isnt) or single (master woth no slave) if a slave is present
3. masters are always at the end of the cable, a single drive on an IDE cable needs to be at both the end of the cable and a Master (or Cable Select)
4. verify its an 80 wire 40 pin cable (ATA66\100\133)
5. Bust out the manual and review the BIOS options applicable to the 2nd controller
