Hey,

I just learned something elsewhere, and I was wondering what you folks are doing.

I have 4 devices, HD, HD, DVD, and DVDRW. How do I hook these up for best performance?

I use the comp primarily for Audio recording and video editing. All my A/V files go on the second HD with the programs on the first HD. What I have been doing is HD1 on IDE1 master, DVD on Slave, then A/V HD2 on IDE2 Master and DVDRW on IDE2 slave. Is this the best way, performance-wise?

What I read elsewhere is that I'd get better performance putting the HD's on the same IDE and the opticals on the other IDE. It seems to me they'd be "butting heads" a lot.

What's best?

Thanks.

IDE speeds ona single channel are limited to the speed of the slowest device connected on them. Newer hard drives are capable of running faster than optical drives. Check the speeds of your devices. If your hard drives are older you may not see any difference. That's one of the advantages of SATA over PATA.

Thanks for the replies guys! My mobo has 2 SATA slots I think, but my HD's are IDE. I'm not at home right now, so humor me. :)

If I get SATA HD's, would that free up the IDE channel? Or, theoretically, could I hook up an SATA HD for the programs, another SATA HD for my VIDEO files, have a HD on IDE1 M and an HD on IDE1 S for audio files, then IDE2 with the above mentioned optical drives? Or does using the SATA eliminate one of the IDE channels? Mobo is MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR if that makes any difference. :D

Total Noob on SATA so any help is quite appreciated.

I'm not familiar with your mobo, but I haven't heard of SATA taking away anything of the IDE. They each have seperate controllers. You could spread out a bit and if possible get the IDE channels down to one device each which could improve your throughput on those channels. Remember SATA drives run a bit warmer than PATA drives. Keep that it in mind when deciding.

Im sorry that is incorrect thank you for playing
Vanna do we have a consolation prize for our contestant?

:p

Augster your current configuration should provide you with the best performance for your typical application (video) ;)
(see link above as to why that mythology is so pervasive)
You might want to consider Multiple Pagefiles and a review of Virtual Memory in XP

Video is one of the applications where RAID can pay big dividends
something for further consideration

Learn something everyday. I humbly beg for forgiveness. Seems from the amount of links I had to dig through to get to the good explanation on independent device timing, that this is a widely held misconception. My apologies for perpetuating a fallacy.

there is a good reason why that particular myth fails to die
dont feel bad
just spread the word :D

Well on older chipsets it was applicable. Never heard anything about being able to disregard it. You oughta write a book. Wipped out my hardware bible, and nada on the subject. I read it awhile back and never forgot it. I'll forget it now, I promise.
