Need help with cooling for Socket A AMD XP2000+

Hi, quick question here.

Girlfriend's grandparents have an HP 751x that has an AMD Athlon XP2000+

Well the problem is the socket (socket a) on the motherboard that contains the lips to secure down the heatsink/fan has snapped. Just one of the lips on one side has snapped off and obviously is necessarily to secure the fan/heatsink.

My question is, can this socket be replaced or are there any fans/heatsinks that don't need those lips to be installed.

I have never really dealt with AMD cpu's or motherboards so I am not exactly sure. I found some fans/heatsinks but they all require to be secured with those lips it appears. I am assuming against the actual socket being able to be replaced, but figured I'd throw that out there as a solution instead of having to get a new motherboard.

Are there mounting holes in the motherboard? If not, you may need to replace the motherboard since you will need those tabs to properly install the heatsink.
 
Yeah that's what I was afraid of. There weren't mounting holes that I could see unfortunately.
 
There are 3 lips on each side correct? If so did you just break the center lip on one side? If this is the case then you can get an aftermarket cooler that uses all three lips (or 2 in the case of the broken one) and you should be fine.
 
I believe the socket frame is part of the motherboard...

A cheaper alternative to the other suggestions would be to use ARCTIC SILVER ADHESIVE mixed with Acrtic Silver 5 in a 50:50 ratio. Since we're dealing with a SOCKET A system, I doubt there are any plans to upgrade to a "faster" socket A CPU in the future.

GLUE THE SUCKER DOWN!

Just make sure you let them know what you are doing, if they have a problem with it.... price out the cost of C2D system and see if they'd rather go that route.
