Anyone have any good tips on getting this case to actually cool stuff? Currently I am unable to continually use my machine due to overheating.

Asus MB with 6400+ and a Peltier cooler , seems to handle the heat well - Its not the problem.
My main issue seems to be my ATI 4870x2 and my motherboard.
I only have 3 hard drives in the case right now.

I heard of people adding a bottom fan to push air outside.
If I add a fan near the hard drive cage , which direction should air flow?

Your having heat issues with a cosmos? wow.... thats slightly shocking.

Amusing it's simmer in fan placement to the cosmos s. Mount 3 fans on top blowing air out because heat rises. Than mount a small fan at the bottom of the hard drives pushing air up.
And at the back i'd have it bring cold air in.

Atleast how i have mine set up and heats not an issue at all. Hows your wiring? is it all over the place or have you done wire management.

Hey, I have the original cosmos, and I have no heating issues.

I mounted a thin hyper fan in the vent at the bottom under the hard drives so it sucks air from below the case and brings it into the case.

The top fans, I have 1 blowing air in (the one before the CPU heatsink) and the 2nd one sucking air out. I also have the rear fan sucking air out. I have SSD drives, so they stay pretty kool, but I did mount a 80mm fan in the vent where the harddrives are right infront of the videocards, and that is blowing air toward the videocards. I also have the 2nd fan that sucks air from the bottom of the case with that wierd twist thing and have it aimed at my videocards too.

I have an i7 and 2 295's, and have no heating problems.

I did however purchase from coolermaster's store the Cosmo's type S side panel w/ the giant 230mm fan in it. It is backwards compatible w/ the original cosmos. It is a tad off color, but I wanted my 295's to stay really kool. This might be an option for you. The only negative is you have to watch the clearance of the fan and your CPU cooler, Mine didnt clear, I had to do some custom drilling, and mount the fan on an angle to get it to fit w/ my TRUE 120.

if you're using the stock fans then get rid of the pieces of shit they move hardly any air, when i had one and switched out the fans for yate loons my temps were a lot better.

Does adding a bottom fan help? I cut out 2 92mm fan holes in front for intake, the rear and top are pushing air out. My case stays relatively cool but then again, I don't monitor my temps.
