I have a Gigabyte X58 UD3R motherboard and would like to know if I can install a PCI soundcard on it. Or do I need get a PCI Express soundcard for it?

Just look at the motherboard to see what free slots you have, IIRC the ud3r has 2 pci slots. So you can use those, or if you want you can use a PCIe slot.

Which UD3R do you have? GA-EX58-UD3R or GA-X58A-UD3R?

If you have the X58A, you have only one PCI Legacy slot on that board. The EX58-UD3R has two PCI Legacy slots but only four DIMM slots (versus six DIMM slots on the X58A-UD3R).

By the way, PCI Legacy cards are not compatible with PCI-e slots. Not even physically.
