Need Help with Calibrating my CRT

I got a second-hand 22" HP p1230 Diamondtron CRT. It was manufactured March, 2005.

It still has 2 years of HP afterservice on it even.

Here is the thing, when I first got my new Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers I put the subwoofer up right beside the CRT (right side) for maybe 20 minutes until I noticed the distortion it caused. Then I put it under the desk, right side - about 2 feet away total I guess. It didn't SEEM to cause any distortion anymore.

But now, on a pure white screen, the right 1 inch of the screen seem to bleed a little red and be a bit faded when showing whites and black on whites. Not that much fade, mostly a bit blotchy with a slight, very slight, pinkish haze. I do not know if this has always been there. Maybe my subwoofer did it in the 20 min it was beside the CRT or maybe it has been doing it slowly when it was under the desk (only 2 feet away)? I have nowset it up so it is slighlt over the recommended 3 feet away.

I am new to computers and I have DLed the opwners manual. But I do not understand half the things on the On Screen Display. But I have been fiddling to get my whites pure down the right side of the screen.

I set the color temp to standard 6500k RGB (weirdly the higher temps seemed nicer). I hit the "reset to factory defaults button". I have degaussed a few times. I tried messing with upper left and lower left corner color purity buttons (no idea what they area). But still the problem persists. I could play with the clamp position pulse button - if I knew what it is.

Hell, I can't even get my geometry right there are so many buttons and it is so frustrating. But I can live with that cause I know it is just a matter or learning and patience. But with the pinkish discoloration issue I am not sure if I just don't know how to adjust yet or if something is wrong and I need to call in HP after-service (no idea how that works - have to get original owner to call it in I bet, luckily he has been cool and is helpful).

Any ideas what is up here or what a newbs next step should be?

I also have moved my CRT quite a few times recently as I adjusted my workspace since everything is new and I'm still settling in.

Some googling suggests that this slight pinkish/purplish haze could well be a result of magnetization by a combination of the original subwoofer placemenyt, it subsequently still being within 3 feet for 3 weeks, and due to moving the CRT.

According to these sights it might well take a dozen or more full degausses (either by manually degaussing, turning CRT off for 20 minutes, and redoing it) or just over time as the auto-degausser fires up everytime I turn the CRT on for a new day.

Is there any possibility this is true and I just need to wait it out now that I have stopped moving it and have moved muy subwoofer 40 inches away?

I would say keep manually degaussing it after it warms up. Try it for a week or two, I think it would help.

Also, do you have the desktop speakers sitting near the monitor? That may be adding to the problem.

Putting the subwoofer below the desk should be enough distance. I think the problem originated when the speaker was right next to the monitor.

Yeah my 5.1 speakers are on the desk (very big surface mind you. One is even on top of the CRT. However, the picture in the instal guide even shows them near a CRT IIRC They seem to be shield or not have big magnets - they are pretty small. They seem to have to effect on my picture. The distortion is all on the right side where I had my subwoofer for maybe 20 min - maybe longer like an hour.

Also, when under my desk it was only 2 feet and the piture on the left side actually imoprved a bit when I moved it to 3.5 feet away - doesn't improve anymore if I move further away. I think it was still impacting the CRT for a month when it was right underneath it to the right.

Assuming I do have a magnetization problem, any chance I would need to get a pro in with an external demagnetizer?

as an aside. I am just tuing the picture overall - so many things to calibrate on a CRT. The default color temp was 9600 but I just now learned that it is best set to near 6500 or standard sRGB - at least a googled site aid that. But can the interanl settings be off i.e. 6500 setting might not actually be 6500K? Everything looks kinda off now that I am at 6500K - but maybe I just got used to 9600. I wish I knew how to perfectly calibrate this thing from A to Z lol What a pain a CRT is proving to be. Seems worthwhile in the long run, but do they always have to involve so much more learning and work to get right than an LCD?

Are there still techs who can come to your house and externally degauss or adjust the monitor?

Is subwoofer besdide CRT such a huge no no that doing it for 20 minutes can screw up your CRT that bad?

It only takes a split second for a strong magnet to interfere with the picture.. take it to a local electronics repair shop(not a store). They should definitely be able to degaus with the wand very quickly for you. If your nice they might not even charge. :)
