Need help with building server [hardware]

So I got 6 (yes count em 6) Intel Pent 4 Xeon's lined up to be turned into a small garden. They are all socket 603, four of them are 2.8 Ghz the other two are 3.0 Ghz.

I just need to build them out.

The board I'm thinking about is this baby here:

The first question, is which heat sink works with these boards?

The second question, is how much memory do I want to stick in these things? Right now my other 3 dual xeon servers (work boxen) are only using under 50 megs for all FAH clients :eek:

Memory is cheap so I'm not to concerned with cost, but more concerned with optimizing these to get most point out of them that I can. Should I try going big work units? Does that give more points, if so, what is the optimal amount of memory?

Thrid question, do you have to install DDR memory in pairs?


Anyways, that is the setup I'm going with (already have all the procs, got a great deal on them)... if you could suggest a better setup, I'm all for it. Anyone know where I could find a Quad socket 603 board? I like Tyan a lot (cause they are fucking rock solid stable)

DDR doesn't have to be in pairs, although in some cases you'll need single-sided DDR to run in Dual channel. I don't know much about that, but I'm sure other people here will be able to fill in more details.

The big work units have a points boost because they're big, so you get more points/day/GHz from them. The biggest QMDs can take up to 256MB RAM apiece, the 600-point GROMACS WUs take about 100MB. If you plan around that, you'll be good on memory.

I have no idea on the heatsinks.
 
thanks, I'll got for 2 sticks of 256MB per server.

That's 512MB total and I'll run one with Big work unit and one "normal" FAH client.

Since those are Xeons big wu might get you QMDs. Those take like 300+ mb. Just a warning.
 
I personally would run a gig total for each server, that gives each cpu 512 to play with so they shouldn't be paging even if both get a QMD to work on at the same time. But you could solve that problem by putting one on small units like you said and it would save you some dough. I would say 768 minimum on those machines since you have 2 cpus on each.
