need help with a dell 8100

my dad wants me to change the floppy drive on his dell 8100 but i cant seem to get the damn thing out. There are 2 screws holding it in and the other screw is on the other side of the case, it looks literally impossible to get out, i have tried taking the whole front panel off but i still couldnt find out how to yank the drive out. What do u guys think i should do?

why does he need you to change the floppy drive?

just unscrew the screws and pull it out. shouldnt be rivetted in or anything
 
the floppy drive was broken somehow......anyways i managed to get the drive out, i just had to get some pliers and bend the clips out, there werent any screws. but do i have to get a floppy from dell or can i just use the normal floppies? It seems like dell uses its own parts for everything.
 
You should be fine w/ a standard drive. I've reused floppies out of old Dells before. You might need a goofy Dell part if it's got some kind of odd mounting though, like sits behind a hole in the front of the case. You can probably just get one of the same brand the Dell drive is if that's the case though.
Most Dell parts aren't really all that special. AFAIK it's usually just the mobos, PSUs, heatsinks, and cases that are custom or wierd. Ram, cards and drives are basically standard except for a few custom cards.
A lot of the cases are actually basically ATX. I've swapped mobos in one before. It was a huge pain though (had to splice a ribbon cable... 32 solder connections & tape up each one to do it right), and definately not worth it considering a new PSU is needed as well.

Most, if not all, newer Dells have the floppy built into the front of the case. (no 3.5" cutout) I'm pretty sure the 8100 is that way, and if it is, you'll need a dell floppy. They're probably not much on ebay.
 
Before buying one from Dell, I would make sure it's not just a normal floppy drive with its front cover removed. My parents have a Dell (Dimension 8200), and while I haven't fiddled with the floppy, it does seem that it's a possibility.
 
ok guys i finally solved the problem......i got a regular floppy drive and removed its faceplate and then i removed the eject button and stuck it in there, and it works! But then i cut up my fingers quite a but :( damn dell cases :p
