Three years ago I built an Athlon XP 2500+ and overclocked it to 3200+. The video card is radeon 9700 pro and I have 512MB DDR400. This is the benchmark I got from 3dmark 2001.:

The other day I built an E4300 (installed latest ATI drivers and directx and motherboard drivers), using stock speeds and the same 512MB DDR400, radeon 9700 pro this is what I get:

So I go from Athlon XP to Core 2 Duo and I only gain about 1000ish points?

Why did my nature score drop 30%?

Pretty much. Your CPU is no longer a limiting factor, and that extra 1000 points is all it's giving you with that card. The added speed does nothing for your score. You only notice a big difference when changing CPUs if the CPU was a major bottleneck before. Yours simply wasn't.

Nice comparison but your ATI drivers are completely different between the two so it's hard to start jumping to conclusions.

The Core2Duo doesn't start to really shine until it's had a good overclocking. That's going to be tough since you went with an ECS board to support your AGP card.

You're using the same graphics card and your CPU has gone from 2300 MHz down to 1800 MHz. 3DMark2001 is a single threaded application which means that second core in the C2D isn't being used. The first test Car Chase - Low Detail is a good pure cpu test and it's up 24% so you're really not doing too bad. The problem is your expectations were too high.

The nature test has taken a hit which is a sign that the graphic drivers you're using are quite different. Your previous drivers may not have been displaying this test correctly which let it score much higher than it should have. That's why Futuremark recommends you only use their approved drivers so your scores are actually comparable.

Here's a link so you can comare to an overclocked C2D at 3000 MHz with an ATI X1600 Pro card.

If you spend more money on an X1950XT then your scores will look something like this:

Anyone have any idea what approved drivers for 3dmark 2001 might be?
I want to stay with 2001 because 03 and later seem to depend more on GPU than CPU.

This site lists only 03, 05, 06 approved drivers....

If I downgrade my drivers I should get a more comporable score right?

Your nature score should be similar cos youre using the same video cards..... if you adjust your e4300 nature score to 106 ( same score as A64) then you will get 18,264.... 2K difference is about right with your upgrade.....

I looked at some of my scores, from a XP2100+ + 9700pro on aircooling compared to A64 3200+ + 9700 on -20c water the difference was only 4700pt...... so the increase you got looks about right.....

Didnt know Im still in the 1st page of the ORB with my 3 year old score lol.....:D

I finally found old drivers and when using them, my nature score went back to around 100fps (from 70).

However the car chase dropped 30fps so my overall score increase was less than 200...
So I guess its a toss to which drivers I really should use...??

Hey how did you manage to get over 20K on an aircooled athlon xp 2100+ and radeon 9700 pro?

How much are those things overclocked.
I don't get how a core 2 duo could still underperform an xp 2100+

Here is a guy with an E6600 at 2.65 and 9700 pro at 357/640.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=9113584

I'm pretty sure I can pin mod E4300 to hit 2.7 and OC my 9700 from 325/620 to 357/640...those are easy OC's

But somehow i don't think I can gain the 6800 points I need to get up there simply if I change e4300 to e6600...

pin mod? you sholdnt need to do any modding to overclock a c2d, perhapse an mch volt mod but its useless on your board.

Your E4300 and 9700pro is probably at stock settings with no tweaks to the OS..... My XP2100+ and 9700pro is running as fast as it could possibly go on air... plus the OS is tweaked.... It finished 3dmark but I doubt I can play a game for more than 15mins on that settings.....

I need pin mod to make my mobo think its a 266mhz fsb because I use an ECS mobo and those things don't have AGP/PCI locks.
