I have an old Gateway sitting here and i wanna set it up so i can host some files from it.

How would i go about setting it up as a server \ FTP ?

I'm using Win98 on it cause its a PII 400Mhz.

Any help @ all is greatly appreciated.

I'm only planning on hosting maps for HL games, skins & sounds. and maybe a few programs.

I want something that is free and easy.

whats wrong w/win98 ? if i just turn on my comp and leave it be

Do you have any webspace that comes free with your isp?

I don't think you can do what you asked with Win 98. I would use Red Hat Linux 9 or Windows 2000. I have used both and Win 2k easier to use because it's easier to establish a connection with other computers and my network. I also find it easier to know where to enter the DNS ip details.

You may have to but a book to tell you how to do what you asked as it would be far to difficult to explain. I would buy a book by 'Sams' as they go into good amounts of detail but are still easy to understand and read.

you dont want to use windows 98 especially, or imo windows in general (2k/xp/server not AS bad) because of major security issues

what you want is just a box that serves webpages?
you should look at installing some form of linux and apache
(clarkconnect is very easy to setup and does in fact serve webpages, and you can edit pages through regular windows file shares)

or you should install 2k/xp on a box
run all windows updates, and disable every single unneeded service and then install apache. (if you use IIS, more power to you, when you get hacked, dont come here asking for help, you been warned)
