need help using 2nd router as switch

hi everyone,

i'm trying to use my smc 7004vbr router as a switch to avoid having to run new runs of cat5 or buying an actual switch to do it.

the setup is as follows

dsl modem->linksys wrt54gl --->computer
.........................................--->smc-->computer
.................................................... --->xbox/ps2

followed the guide i read at this link http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?board=Knowledge;action=display;num=1133918703

but when connected computer will only pull 169 ip's and won't connect

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
 
connect to the "router" fom your main one via a LAN port, NOT via the wan port and turn off DHCP... ?
 
2nd router is connected on both ends to lan port and dhcp is disabled on the 2nd router
 
not sure if the port have auto sensing, but did you use a crossover cable or straight through

are the lights on the router -> switch port lite up ?
 
lights light up on the router just fine using straight through's not crossovers

to make things even more interesting i decided to hookup the laptop via the same configuration directly to the 1st router and it seemed to work

it doesn't seem to work when running cat 5 to wall panel (wall jack that you strip wire and attach to back of jack) and then wall panel to 2nd router

it's strange because the 2nd router recognizes both cables and detects traffic it just won't push an IP to anything connected to it
