I am looking to upgrade my speakers from just using the monitor speakers to either 2.1 or 5.1. My motherboard is an A8N-SLI, with the audio chipset Realtek ALC850 and 8 channels. Does this mean I can hook up 2.1 or 5.1 speakers with no problems or do I need to get a sound card? How big of a difference in sound quality would a sound card make?

Also what are some good 2.1 and 5.1 speaker systems, prefferably under 100 dollars?

You have a maximum budget of $100 usd.

Your best sound quality option would be to get a set of headphones and an inexpensive sound card that is capable of driving them and has at least decent sound quality.
 
I just got my Logitech Z-2300 for $106 Shiped at newegg and i really like them, then again i have never heard anything of suppassing Quality before, so.........
 
No I meant under 100 for just the speakers, not the sound card. I was looking at the Z-2300 I think I might get that or X-530. Does anyone know which one is better, the X-530 is like 30 dollars cheaper and 5.1.

Also about how much would a decent sound card cost for these speakers?

What is your maximum budget for upgrading your SYSTEM?

Do you have any other audio-related items that could potentially be used with this, or sold to help get you money for this upgrade?

Do you have headphones? Which model? What about current speakers? Which model?

How much do you game? How much of that is in a first person shooter or similar game? How much do you listen to CD's on your PC? Listen to downloaded mp3's? Self-ripped mp3's? Watch DVD's? Watch other movies? etc. etc. etc...
 
If someone could tell me what the average bottom of the line, mid range, and top of the line costs would be for a complete sound system with a sound card then I'll tell you my budget, because I'm not really sure how much I want to spend yet.

All I have audio related right now are Maxell NC-2 Headphones.

I game alot mostly first person shooters, HL2, BF2, etc. I also listen to rock and like to turn the volume up. Yes I listen to mp3's, and I don't really watch DVD's or any movies.
