Wassup peoples, im a newbie to upgrading computers, so i came here for help, seeing that most of you in here know whats yalls talking about.i have a simple question. please bare with me if im anoyying.anyway to the question... If i updrage to the nVidia 7800 GTX OC do i need a new motherboard? or what. im  completely lost. please help  ,. any sugestions...

you will need a new motherboard, new processor, and new ram (if ur sticking with intel)

as far as i know there is not a socket 486 pci express mobo, so there u have to by a LG775 mobo... with leads to upgrading ur processor to accomadate the different socket, and with that u'll need new ram since intel uses DDR2

how do i check what kind of a mobo i have? uggghh so confusing.. mine doesnt have a DDR2 its only a DDR.or is it.. whats SDRAM? 512 ram isnt enough?

ur mobo (since is a HP) is prolly a no name generic mobo

DDR is SDRAM... just a variant of it. DDR2 is implemented with the new LG775 intel socket, and supposedly has potential of higer bandwidth.

if ur seriously about gaming (and it seems like ur are, since ur thinking about a GTX), 1 Gb is the comfortable minimum for ram. Battlefield 2 chews up 2GB

im reallllllllllllllly serious iabout gaming, i wanna turn my pc into a gaming pc :D ..so u suggest that i should get the LG775 mobo? or do u have any other suggestion.. i dont wanna sound psycho, but i wanna turn my PC into the everybodys "Dream PC" for gaming..

if ur gonna game, i suggest going the AMD route (since even if u go LG775, u'll still need buy a intel processor)....

one concern is that if u upgrade taht much, u might as well get a new rig all together. don't expect u just jam everything in a dinky HP case. plus u'll need a new power supply (GTX eats lots of power, and u can ask any one here, a good power supply is high priority regardless).

a typical good AMD gaming rig:

AMD athlon64 3700+ san diego
DFI or ASUS nforce4 mobo
1gb of name brand ram (DDR, since AMD still uses DDR)
7800GTX
and a good solid name brand 500w power supply

Here it goes..

Well for starters you aren't going to be able to turn your computer into a gaming PC. You will have to replace most of it.

Next, if you are going to build your own PC, go with AMD and get an Athlon 64 3000+ or above depending on what you can afford. IMHO all the Athlon 64 chips are really very good quality and flexible processors.

You can get 1GB of quality, branded, PC3200 DDR RAM for about $100. For gaming, I'd suggest minimum of 1GB and an ideal of 2GB. you could even get faster RAM if you want like PC4000.

And for a motherboard, get some nForce 4 Ultra motherboard. You can even get an nForce 4 SLI motherboard so you can upgrade by adding a second 7800 GTX down the line if you wish.

I'm presuming you are wiling to spend a lot of money if you mentioned that you want a 7800 GTX and you want a "Dream Gaming PC".

San Diego if the name of the core of the Athlon 64 processors for socket 939. Every so often, AMD will make revisions, improvements, optimizations, and will add some features. The San Diego core is one of the latest and greatest along with the Venice core.

You dont need a new mobo just cut off the excess pins of the 7800gtx and slam it in

dont listen to the guy above me.

You're better off with a new PC though. The cost to make that computer into a gaming rig is what you'd pay for a new gaming PC IMO. Good luck.

I agree with guy above me :)
Start over!

If you want to be bleeding edge with your video card you need to be bleeding edge with the rest of it.

Make sure, that for the love of god and all that is good in this world, you buy a powerful PSU...
Not just some high wattage one, but a heavy, high-quality PSU, like an Antec Neopower

are you sure i can believe you..."Shameless Liar" haha just kiddin.. :D

some questions..

why AMD and not Intel is it because AMD is more for gaming and Intel is more for business work? i heard AMD had a smaller brother or was it bigger ..

what is the best of the best brand for motherboards...

please help a gamer brother out, i REALLY wanna learn.

do they sell these stuff at BESTBUY or Circuit City ? and noone answer my question about the 2 links from the earlier post. Thanks

MAJOR THANKS..the god father appreciate it.

Godfather, first of all since noone else has done it, welcome to the [H] good to see you interested.

Unfortunately you are probably not going to have the instant gratification of going into a store and buying everything. Circuit City and Best Buy don't really cater well to our lifestyle and needs.

Thats why we have

www.newegg.com
www.zipzoomfly.com

those are just two of the many places to get the hardware you need and its usually 2 day shipping, zipzoomfly has free shipping on most items.

Reading through some of the threads is the best way to learn about what is "good" and not because you will see what people are doing and if thats what you want to do you can see what worked out for them and learn from thier mistakes.

If you are price wary (which everyone pretty much is) and patient you can browse the [H]ot|Deals thread and get some amazing deals but its gonna take some time to get everything you want.

My suggestion, go to one site, bundle shipping and get it done. You are probably not gonna be able to keep anything from the HP so build a whole new system.

I recently built my new system so you can take some points from there to kinda guide you in the right direction. The only thing I kept from my old system was my hard drive.

What I bought:
The first 4 items I got on newegg.com. I got the power supply from the For Sale For Trade thread here.
The Lanboy case I bought at CompUsa because I was too impatient and I also got the P160 case and CompUsa. I took the floor model and they gave it to me for $50. Only thing wrong with it is the 3.5 bay drive covers are missing.

But that should be enough to get you going.

You're actually the first one to pick up on the fact that I am Shameless Liar.

And actually they were saying don't listen to the guy ho said to cut off the pins in your graphics card t make it fit.

Ad for AMD vs. Intel - I and a lot of others find that Athlon 64s often have lower temps than the newer Intel Pentium 4s. They are also a bit cheaper than Pentiums, overclock really really well, and have better performance IMHO especially in games.

As for motherboards, many people are fond of ASUS or DFI. My chaintech isn't bad either.

You can show at Best Buy or Circuit City if you wish, but realize that 99% or the computers they sell there will be Intel based. They will not sell Processors alone, or motherboards etc. You can go to Frys if you want to buy from a shop, even though Frys too is expensive. You can save a lot of money if you build yourself, and if you order online.
