Well here is the background on what had happened
i turned the computer on then went and ate dinner, when i walked back in i turned the monitor on, everything came up how it was suppose to on the screen showing my desktop and all, had a mouse cursor and all but it looked like it had frozen up so i hard restarted it. when it booted back up, i had no lights on my keyboard, the monitor was still black with a lil box that kept going back and fourth from analog to digital, still had a mouse light...then i noticed the a louder than normal noise coming from the video card, and the fan was going full bore on it...i unplugged everything and pulled the card out blew the little bit of dust on it off, and reseated it and plugged it all back up, same thing happened on bootup

is this a video card issue or a mobo issue?

video card is a pci-e BFG 9800 gt i want to say, its a 9800 of some type but im not home to know for sure...video card is just over a year old now

any ideas for troubleshotting, i have plugged the dvi into the other port to see if it would work still nothing, im out of ideas

I had this problem not to long ago and it was from an unstable oc of my cpu. What happen was it would hang up on the intializing the cpu phase of the boot up process. What I did was reset the board and then upped the voltage on my oc then problem solved. Hope this helps.

i am not overclocking anything at all, video card or cpu related so i dont see how that would be my problem...a guy mentioned that my power supply may not be putting enough out for the video card to get good power to do its thing and that may be why there is a louder than normal hum from the video card

my psu is just some generic 450 watt one, i do have a 650 watt psu that is an antec that i could try but i havent done that yet wanted to see if it was something else related to the video card

Since it is a generic 450w, I would suggest trying out the 650w one, but how long have you been running the card on the 450w. Also your psu could be dying in the other hand.

bought the card a year ago this time of year so its been running off that psu for a year now, and never have had a hiccup or anything at all, playing for 12 hours straight never had any problem at all either

If it was a generic psu, then the components are going to be low end which degrade overtime a lot faster than a known good psu.

alrite ill try out that other psu and see what happens and ill get back to you on what happens

If that doesn't work, go to the "I stuck my card in the oven and it worked" thread. A lot of nvidia's cards as of that generation had a lot of solder joint problems.

This is terrible advice. Don't tell the op to just go out and buy parts that he might not need.

Then it's worth a shot for sure. Generic PSUs aren't known for their reliability. GL.

well it wasnt the psu

any more ideas, trying to get ahold of a buddy that also has pci-e to try and get a spare video card and or him try mine out to trouble shot further

do you hear any beeps when POST occurs?

if you hear one solid beep then it's fine, try running the beep code if you hear anything else, consult your motherboard manual.

no there are no beeps whats so ever at all, i swapped ram around to see if that had any dice with it but still no dice

Generic psu have been know to fry cpu's, mobo's, gpu, hdd's, and ram.

if he changed out the crappy PSU with a known good working one (the Antec) then it stands to reason since he hears no beeps, that his mobo is fried.

Sorry buddy, Bravo is right, while a generic (or just plain ass cheap) PSU will do the job, it won't do it as well as other PSU's, simply because they aren't made well. Corsair builds some really good PSU's, I recommend you buy one of theirs.

Don't take my word for it, look around in the PSU section or look at johnnyguru.com

buying a PSU based on newegg reviews or just because it's cheap isn't a good idea bro

that Antec you bought should be fine, is it the EarthWatts?

Also, let me impart some wisdom bro

"You get what you pay for." and "You only buy quality once."

yea the antec is an earthwatts psu

just a question dont mean to sound dumb but im guessing the pci-e slot is fried on the board since the board still lights up and can function by powering up the computer and whatnot but still some parts not working...yea i didnt buy the crappy psu to begin with, a buddy had bought it and put it in when i bought his old rig cuz he took the one that was in there out to put in his new machine

i read the review on the psu i got off johnnyguru.com and it seemed to be good for what i do

trying to get ahold of a friend that either has a spare board or at least a spare vid card to try in it and get him to try mine in his to see if the card is toast also

but my guess is like yall have said the board is bye bye

Can you post? Does your motherboard have onboard video? If it does, does it work?

no onboard video on it, if u look in my signature you can see the board that i have or the one in suspection of it being toasted

last night i posted from my second computer at home which is an agp computer

now im posting from work on my work computer

LOL! you just made my day.
Is your bios posting up when you turn on the computer. Is their a secondary pci x16 card you can use to verify if it is only the card or something else with the system.

how did i make your day?

nah nothing comes up on the screen likes its not getting a signal to the video card or from the video card to the monitor................no secondary pci-e port

ill keep yall posted this evening, going to a buddies house to swap vid cards and try a few things

I should have clarified it a little more. Do you have another video card or can get one to test.

yes this evening ima go to my friends house and we will swap cards around and a few other things to rule out as much as possible with it

welp update, his card didnt work in my computer but my card worked in his computer so its not my video card after all

next is the mobo i suppose, he is a little more computer savy than me and he said from what i explained to him and what he saw when i was there, he said it was mobo

next question would be how do i telll if the chip is toasted as well? do i just take it all down and look at the chip? and if so how would i know if it is bad now?

and last question, any suggestions on mobos? i run 2 gigs of ddr2 800 ram............e6600 core 2 duo processor,

What kind of system does he have? If he has a lga 775 socket, I would try swapping it piece by piece with your parts until you find the problem. If the problem doesn't follow it is the motherboard.
