Need help to install 2nd hard drive

I've just gotten a 74 gb Raptor to replace my IBM 180gxp eide drive. I plan to install XP on the Raptor, and use the IBM for storage. I have some questions about how to do this since the eide drive has an existing OS on it.

I know how to install the Raptor, but after I get the OS on it, can I just hook up the IBM, boot up and format it from within Windows by right clicking on the drive and clicking format?

Do I hook up to the IBM to the primary or secondairy eide controller, or does it matter?

Any other hints?

Yea, you can format the drive from windows if there is no data on it you want.

I tend to prefer putting the hard drive on the secondary IDE channel and leaving the IDE hard drive as the only device on the primary IDE channel. It depends how many drives you have in your system and how big your case is (whether the cable will physically reach where you need it to).

You lost me in your second paragraph, first sentence. :confused: I have a dvd burner, dvd rom drive, the IBM (eide) and the Raptor (sata). And plenty of room.

I just put a Raptor on my system at work and was really surprised at the speed difference.

Personally I think you should just experiment a bit.
There are basically 3 sensible options.
1. IBM HD alone on channel 0 and the 2 opticals on channel 1.
2. IBM HD as master on channel 0, DVD-Rom on channel 0 as slave and DVD-RW alone on channel 1.
3. IBM HD as master on channel 0, DVD-RW on channel 0 as slave and DVD-Rom alone on channel 2.

Each one has possible advantages and disadvantages. Performance-wise It's best to have 1 device per channel.
Option 1 should give the best hard drive performance, but you'll need to see if your DVD drives will handle DVD and CD copies directly from the DVD-Rom to the DVD-RW if that's important to you.
Option 2 should allow you to do burns from the HD or the DVD-Rom drive without any problems, but will make the HD a little slower than it would be with option 1. You may also get better performance copying from the DVD-RW when the destination is the IBM HDD.
Option 3 is pretty much just for the case where option 1 doesn't allow DVD-Rom to DVD-RW copies and the DVD-Rom isn't playing nice and is making your IBM HD really slow. Hopefully you won't have to resort to this.
If you're not happy with any of these setups, just get a PCI ide card (they're cheap) and hook one or both of the DVD drives up to it. Keep the HD on the built in one, as the integrated controller is usually attached to something faster than 32-bit 33MHz PCI.

I vote to keep the HD as single/master on channel 1 then hook up the opticals on channel 2 with the burner as master.
