Need help securing router

I have the Belkin F5D7230-4 router with a pc hard wired into it and a laptop with wireless. Im not sure how to secure it properly. Right now I have to leave the router with security off cause the laptop cant find the router with it on. When its on the laptop can access it once but once the laptop goes off and back on it doesnt see the router in the list. Whats the best setting I should use and/or what are my other options for securing?

I'd make sure the firmware is up to date on the router, latest drivers and windows updates for the laptop..give WPA a shot. What wireless NIC are you using? Maybe it's an old B type?
