Hi guys,
I been going crazy. I bough a used Adaptec 31605 controller with 16 ports, latest firmware. Connected to the backplanes of Noroco 4220. Intel Core 2 Duo 2.9Gh, 2G RAM DDR2, PCI-E 8x.
So the story begins:
Scenario 1:
5 drives 2TB each Samsung F4 Eco Green raid 0, raid 5 no matter my read never passed 115MB/s with HDTUNE PRO trial latest. Write always about 190MB/s. Both read and write cache enabled.
Scenario 2:
10 WD 2TB green 64 cache EARS if I recall same thing raid 0, 5, 6 about same performance as Scenario1.
Scenario 3:
5 drivers in RAID5, 0 SAS 15k Segate Chedar 15.6 300GB each same performance under windows like Scenario 1 and 2.
This makes no sense. The way I tested had windows server installed on a separate drive(with latest adaptec driver) running HDTUNE and tested the arrays skiping init.
Last summer I build a windows box with 9 drivers 1TB RE3 and got amazing results with RAID 5 and 6 read and write about 450MB but had adaptec 52445 best controler and 2 XEON CPUs and a nice ASUS ZPE18... but now I'm getting stupid results.
I am very mad.. don't know what to really do.
So now I tried linux testing with the 5 SAS drives in RAID 5
for read used the hdparm -tT /dev/sda which got me over 200MB read same drives in HDtune windows never passed the 115MB read.. very weird
and for write with dd got 300MB.
So whats the best way to actually test the performance of the raid controller and the hdds for both random and sequential read and write.
Thanks a lot guys.
