Need help preventing a leak

I'm using a dangerden system, which has worked well for about 6 months, with ahydor pump and thermochill rad . After about 4 months, I noticed a bit of radiator die (which I put into the res) on the floor of my case. Well, the leak continued to accelerate, and has gotten the point where I took the whole system out and leak tested. I'm getting a leak at the outlet of the pump. This didn't surprise me, as there was a leak there when I first put the system together, at which point dangerden advised me to put some vaseline around the seal, which seemed to worked, but it seems to have been a temporary fix.

So my question: is there a better fix which is closer to permanent, or do I need to keep up with routine maintenance? Is it my pump, and if so, can you recommend a good one? Also, the lines have become gunked up with algae or mold, or something. Would a flush with some bleach and water fix it up?

Did you use additives in your water like Hydrx or antifreeze to prevent corrosion and biogrowth?

If there's crap in your water, you definitely need to flush the system. Flush it with distilled water and some biocides, I say.
 
I put water wetter in their, as well as some radiator die (which I deeply regret, as now I've got a black-light active carpet in the computer room :p ), and there still was some funk growing in their. I'm not sure what a biocide is. Well, scratch that, from the name it's something that kills life, but what commercially available product are you referring to?

Thanks in advance for your help, but can you think of anything to do to fix/prevent the leak in the future? I'm a little timid about hooking the system back up, for fear it's going to leak again.

I don't think just water wetter will prevent algae.
Go to a PetSmart and pick up some liquid drops/tablets that kill algae. Add a bit in your loop (if its a tablet, dissolve it all with a bit of distilled water, obviously) and it'll keep it pretty much biologically sterile.
I'm afraid I can't be too much help with fixing the leak, but I'm sure someone around here can lend a hand.
 
For the leak - if its around the barb, JB weld it. I have used it several times in my system to prevent leaks (leaks that never started, but I JB welded them just to be safe) and it works great. I used it to seal my res and to make sure my barb extension on my GPU block didnt leak, and I haven't had a single leak with it.

As for the algae, just use some Anti-freeze. It prevents corrosion, and nothing can live in antifreeze :p
 
If the barb is a threaded fit, go to Home Depot/Lowes/ any home inprovement store that sells plumbing supplies, and get some teflon tape. Two wraps and it will prevent the leak. Of course, I mean remove the barb, clean it, and put the teflon tape on the threads before putting the barb back in. Always use teflon tape on threaded components when putting them together.

Also, get a zip tie gun and some zip ties instead of metal clamps. They are cheaper and easier ti install. The zip tie gun makes them very tight. I use two zip ties on every barb a hose connects to and have NO leaks. I got mine at Home Depot.
 
wow, you guys rock, thanks. About cleaning the existing algae out, I'm gonna use some bleachy water.

I wouldn't do that much, as the bleach will start to dry out/break down the rubber seals in the pump. So if you are going to do that, don't run it like that very long

Well, I give up on the hydor pump, the inlet pipe is held on by a flimsy plastic clip which leaks like mad. When I try to bind it down tightly with zip ties, it causes the pump not to run. I ordered a new pump to replace it, which runs off a 12V out from the PS, which I think is a nice touch.

Thanks for the advice... still trying to get this guy working properly...
 
I will recommend that you dont use water wetter
I used it per the instructions and this was the result

I sent dangerden this picture then they shipped me a new top and told me to use zerex which they include with the new top for free
 
Thought so. I had seen a few places that said not to use that stuff with Aluminum. It even has a detrimental effect on the acrylic parts after a while. Next time I change the water I will be uisng about 1/2 the ammount they reccomend. Sorry to see that happend to you. :(
 
it wasnt really a issue because dangerden sent me a new top for free with some zerex coolant stuff
my temps were slowly increasing on my cpu and I didnt know why when I took the cpu block apart I realized why, 95% of the jets on my cascade were clogged with the crap that was on the gpu block (that I scraped off before that pic)
 
True blindviper, but still a shame it happened at all. Now back to the topic...

Dommer, JB weld moght be your best bet then to get that fixed. If you don't want to wait 24 hours for it to cure you can try 30 or 60 minuit epoxy. A new pump works well too. I never liked the look of the Hydor, or even the Swiftech pumps, went with an Eheim myself.
 
Well, I went ahead and got the dangerden pump that runs on the 12v lead from the ps, because as far as I can tell it looks like it's sealed. I think these hydor pumps are for aquarium/fountain/pond use, where a little leaking is no biggy.
