Once I am done with my training I plan to build a Free-NAS based storage server for my network.
I want to run the Freenas off either a usb or a CF>ide adaptor. I am thinking usb boot so I can leave my ide channels open.
Here's what I need help with. I am not looking for Hevay duty speed. As only one machine or two will pull from it at a time. and I don't need any sort of backup just JBOD probably.
I already own 2x250 and 2x320 ide drives So those will be on the ide channels.
Here's what I need help picking.
Raid controller for 8 sata drives. Something cheaper.
And a good psu/mobo option and choices. I have an older pII back home but I dont know if its usb bootable. Maybe I'll run free-nas off floppy?
but willa P-II with the proper raid cards be able tor un me a good free-nas or am I wanting something more powerfull.
I'm just lsot on if I need to buy a new mobo/cpu plus a gigabit card and two raid cards.
or
stick with this P2 and just buy ide and sata raid cards plus a gigabit card to run, and use CF over ide.
will that give me a raidable and working freenas setup? or may the bios be a biotch with size limits etc. I know new mobo/cpu combo's are cheap.
hoping for a 3-4tb system eventually.
thank you for any advice!
