I currently have a Linksys E2000. I'll be giving it to a friend who is moving to a new apartment. I want to replace it with something else.

I like the idea of DD-WRT and would like something that is well-supported. The Buffalo routers like the WHR-HP-G300n looks like a nice unit but there are a lot of very negative reviews on the unit. Also doesn't have gigabit, which is kind of a necessity.

The Asus routers look good. Thinking about maybe the N16 but I don't need the USB and print server nonsense.

I'm also looking at the Netgear WNR3500L.

I have a 15/1 cable connection with up to 3-4 wireless clients and another 4-5 wired (I have a separate gigabit switch so number of ports isn't an issue).

I'd like to spend no more than $80.

Any suggestions?

My personal opinion
Build one yourself with Untangle. Simple easy to use yet powerful.
If you get bored with that try using PFSense.

Netgear WNR3500L With Tomato USB or dd-wrt
TP-Link WR1043ND with OpenWRT, or Gargoyle 1.5.4 or never.
