Need help overclocking GTX 580.

Okay, this may or may not be the right thread for it but I've recently bought a specific GTX 580 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/itemdetails.asp?EdpNo=7169775&CatId=3669) and I've been trying to overclock it. Now I've been raising the GPU clock by 5Mhz interments and voltage as well but it keeps crashing (especially if I get to the higher voltages).

Can somebody help me with this, please? I know I have to lower the clocks in order to get a more stable system but I don't want my $500 to go to waste.
 
My PSU is a OCZ StealthXStream 600W PSU (goes up to 700W if you want more.)

I've tried overclocking without touching the voltage but it doesn't seem to go past 815MHz.

I recognize that I may have a bad core here but could the PSU be the limiting factor here?
 
What are the rest of the specs on your system? A bad PSU can cause instability when your card is drawing at full power, like during benchmarks.

GTX-580's seem to be generally good overclockers, but as with all computer peripheral overclocking your results can always vary.

Okay...

Core i7 870 @ 4GHz with HT enabled (It's stable, I prime95'd it.)
Corsair Dominator 4GB 2X2 10-10-9-31
ASUS Maximus III GENE LGA 1156 Motherboard.
Scythe RASESTU cooling (so far it's working fine.)
WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM SATA
 
Power draw wise you should be fine, though Im not certain as to the quality of that PSU. I know OCZ has been sketchy in the past.

What are your temps like at maximum stable overclock at stock voltage? Sounds like you may have just reached the limit of what your card wants to do.
 
Crysis: 61 degrees Celsius.
Heaven: almost half that at 55 degrees Celsius.

The GPU hasn't reached it's limits yet, but I'm beginning to think that the VRM cooling solution they placed on there might be the problem.

The GPU is fine but I'm feeling like the VRM is getting to a point where it crashes when I'm stress testing and artifacting when I'm starting up my computer (have to let it wait a few seconds for it to go to normal.)

I'm wondering, if it is the VRM's then what do I need to do next?

A SxS 600 fits the description of bad PSU.

I had one for about a week. It was unable to power an i7 920 and a 55nm GTX 260. I had crashes all the time even after setting all my clocks back to stock.

Replacing the PSU fixed my problems. If you have access to a different power supply, give that a try. I doubt my sample could even put out 300 watts reliably. Even if that doesn't fix it, you still shouldn't be trusting a $500 GPU to a $40 PSU.
