Hi, I have a few questions i was wondering if you guys could help with me. First off, i'm currently in the process of building a htpc from my left over parts and the mobo i'm using is a Abit NF7 Non-S. It has an optical (toslink) output in the back. I was wondering if i could just use this output port to send all of the DDL and/or DTS sound signal from the movie to the reciever and just left the reciever process it or do i have to get a seperate sound card with an optical output to process it and then send the signal to the reciever?

Just note that the onboard optical out will only output at 48KHz. This means if the original audio is at 48KHz you will get a bit-perfect stream, but if it's at any other bit rate, you won't. All DVD audio is 48KHz, so if you're only worried about movies, this will be fine. If you plan to use it for music, though, the music will be resampled from 44.1KHz to 48KHz, which gives you worse quality than getting a card like an AV710 which can output at 44.1KHz without resampling. Just something to bear in mind.
In that case it depends how worried you are about audio quality...resampling affects the quality slightly, but the effect's there. Depending on how good your speaker setup is and how anal you are about sound quality, choose whether to just be happy with the resampling or spend the $30 to get an AV710. Up to you.
