Need help on first overclock

First i must say i admire your Folding@Home statistics.
I fold a little myself with my 8800GT. Currently producing 5604PPD with a mild OC.

Anyway Hello =D

I have an ASUS P5N-E SLI 650i motherboard and a Q6600 CPU.
I've never overclocked a CPU so i've stayed safe and used the AI Overclock utility on this board, i have it set at 10% so my clock is

2.63GHz 1173MHz FSB and 733MHz memory.

which is fine and dandy, but i cannot seem to get it any higher :( AI Overclock on 15% makes a BSOD on XP. doh.

So i tried manually and decided to stick the FSB at 1333MHz which was 3GHz core and i left the memory stock at 667MHz. But it wouldn't even get past the POST.
So anyway i took the clock down to what it was with the 10% and nudged it up to 1200FSB and XP booted, but not for long. The PC just restarted.

It occasionally boots with the FSB @ 1333 but never stable.

I'm a total noob, and have tweaked very little. All voltages are stock and stuck on auto, memory timings are stock auto.

I've seen people push this CPU to 3.2-3.4GHz and i can only make it to 2.63 :(

So does anyone have advice or experience that might help me?
I'm happy to provide more info if anyone needs it.

well i would take a peek at the overclocking guides that are stikied in this forum cause they do offer some very helpful insight. As for the voltages you will certainly want to set them all to manual, you first want to up the core voltage for your cpu, i never had a quad core so im not sure what a stable voltage for that is but again you can probably find that in the oc guides here. I guarantee you that if you mess around with your volts you will find a stable posting system, but then you wanna run some stability test, orthos, prime95, intel burn in test, or just run alot of stuff on your machine if it crashes you know you need more mods on your settings. Also find out what the "recommended" volts for your ram is, cause i heard ram is the easiest to fry if you set it just a bit too high. Go ahead and post the volts for your cpu and ram so anyone else here can chime in and tell you what they need to be to reach stability.

As far as i know RAM voltage is stock 1.8v as for CPU i'm not sure and can't find out at the moment.

Ok i just tried booting with 1333 FSB with every voltage from 1.23 volts to 1.33 volts and couldn't boot on any of them, XP got to login and computer just restarted.
 
Any other help?

I've tried reducing the voltage, increasing the voltage slightly.
adusting the NB voltage all to no avail.

I'm buying 4GB OCZ 800MHz RAM soon so hopefully should be better than what i have atm
 
Make sure you keep your ram running no faster than stock spec with loose timings. If you're running it at below 800mhz then I'd suggest using 5-5-5-15 timings. Try leaving all voltages at stock and boosting your vcore to 1.35v... 3.0ghz should be easily achievable.
 
Try overclocking with one stick and then the other. You might have a wimpy stick of RAM
