setup:
amd phenomII 920
radeon 4850 512
gigabyte ma74gm-s2 motherboard
4gb ocz 800 ram
coolermaster 750w psu

Im having a little trouble overclocking this system, it has me baffled. Basically bois wont even load when I adjust the fsb to 235+ ...completely freeze up at the first screen once turned on.. Its not the ram/cpu voltage. Im thinking now I shouldn't have cheaped out on the mobo:confused:

thanks in advance !

try dropping the HT multiplier 1 step below default.. which i think is 8x or 1.8ghz to 7x or 1.6ghz and see if that helps.. also if the memory is capable of doing 1066 make sure its set to 5-5-5-18 @ 2.1v or set the memory to ddr2 667.. those should solve the problems you are having..

thanks for the reply! The motherboard doesn't give me the option to edit the ht multiplier.. or the ram timings .. but I can set the memory to 667.. but that doesn't help:confused::confused: I can set the ht link frequency from 200mhz-1ghz .. but I don't think that's any help? This board is frustrating me

oh you are on an am2 socket board.. yeah change the HT link frequency to 800mhz.. if it still fails then go 1 step lower.. 235FSB w/ 1ghz HT would put your HT link at 1200+mhz and no am2 socket board can handle that..

alright that seems to have solved the getting stuck loading bois problem... now im having issues like when my computer crashes when testing it will just stay on regulating fan speed.. its super weird... also i think im going to bring this board back and swap it out soon..
and another question.. when the bois cpu voltage is set to normal it shows 1.44..when the stock cpu voltage is 1.35... is it overvolting?

yeah the boards overvolting the processor.. not that big of a deal just creates more heat and its within the limits of the processor.. do you have the voltage set to auto?

and yes i know its an am2+/am2 but its actually just an am2 board with am2+/am3 support.. so you are still stuck with the old HT1.0 which max's out at 1000mhz(2000mhz)..

in the bios turn off all the fan control stuff.. im not sure what they call it on that board but in there should be some settings to disable the fan speeds.. after you do that it will leave the fan at 100% and never change..

basicly with the HT on the am2 boards.. the rule of thumb is 235FSB= 4x or 800mhz HT, 250-260FSB = 3x or 600mhz, anything above 260FSB= 2x or 400mhz..

if you can set your memory to run 2.1v usually that will help.. you might also have to raise the chipset voltage from 1.1v to 1.2v and see if that helps..

its worth just screwing with it so you can learn a few things before you swap it out for a new board so that when you do you will be ready to overclock on the am2+ board.. its pretty much the same except the HT numbers are a little different..

alright thanks man and yeah, i think im guna tinker with this motherboard, its a little bit more of a challenge but eh, its fun stuff. But truly thanks man im sorting everything out :D
