ok, i have 2 xp computers, 1 laptop 1 desktop hooked up to each other via ethernet cable, how would i go about networking the two to share files?

If your going computer to computer you'll need a crossover cable, not a standard straight through ethernet. GigE Nics are auto MDI/MDX so if both cards are gigabit then you can use X-over or straight through.

Some 10/100 NIC's also have the auto-crossver capability.
