need help HD not recognized

ok so first off I have Win XP on an 80GB maxtor and i have a 250GB maxtor as a slave for all my random stuff i dl. This morning i woke up and got on my computer and i was like hey i'll go run virus scan then go play some games. So I ran virus scan only to have an error message say "Drive D is not ready" this kinda tipped me off to something being wrong but i just said oh well musta been something wrong with virus scan, but oh was i wrong i went to play some games off the hd and it said the stuff doesn't exist so i go to my computer to find out wuts wrong. Once in my computer i attempt to access the drive and try to fix it well windows would have none of that happening it said drive is not formatted format now? This really pissed me off so i went to disk management and the darn things says everything is fine says the drive is healthy and active, went to ms support site and got nothing from them. Anyone else had this problem before? if so wut did you do to fix it cuz i can't format that would erase all my stuff that i have which is over 160GB which includes all my ripped songs (all 12000 of em) my movies (like 35) and all my games which i could reinstall but that would a pain in the butt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps try a new/different ide cable or try using the hard drive in a different computer.
 
i'll do that tomorrow afternoon when i get off work and let you know if it works or not.
 
Start > Run > (type) eventvwr.msc > check both system and application logs for any errors or warnings

also review the power section a hard restart or other minor power event could have corrupted the partition ID or table

since the drive itself is actually recognized, recovery is probable, the question is recovery to where?,
alternately repair "in place" is possible I use an older version of Disk Patch

but the real trick is finding what caused the corruption in the first place
 
ok so i went to event viewer and it said to run chkdisk on the volume but how do i run check disk on a volume besides my c drive? i tried going to run but that only does c disk i think.


help plz

ok so i tried to run chkdsk and i got an error that said something like "could not open volume for direct access" wut should i try now?



ps this is what event viewer said

just running chkdsk will not actually do anything but report problems,
the most common switch is /f to fix problems

Windows 2000, Windows XP chkdsk syntax

Checks a disk and displays a status report.

CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name.
filename FAT only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F Fixes errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F).
/L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified number of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current size.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid (implies /F).
/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by skipping certain checks of the volume.

/X Excludes a drive from the default boot-time check. Excluded drives are not accumulated between command invocations.
/C Schedules a drive to be checked at boot time; chkdsk will run if the drive is dirty.

If no switches are specified, CHKNTFS will display if the specified drive is dirty or scheduled to be checked on next reboot.
 
ach i got nothin.....it won't even run chkdsk or chkntfs it won't do anything so i guess i lost 12000 songs and like 30 movies?
 
you can see it listed in the BIOS and Diskmanagement?


the data is sitting in plain sight to a direct scan,
but it sounds like the pointers to that data have a corruption problem
which is why it wants you to run chkdsk so it can rebuild the entries and lock out any bad sectors

download and run the manufacturers diagnostic

Note: PowerMax v 4.09 will not detect ATA or SATA hard disks connected to embedded or add in RAID controllers, NVIDIA Force 3, Force 4, VIA KT 600 and KT800 chipsets. If the hard disk is connected to an unsupported controller, it will have to be moved to an alternate system, or controller for diagnosis. Please check the PowerMax download page periodically for updates. Beginning June 1st 2004 all versions of PowerMax prior to v4.09 will no longer be supported. Maxtor recommends that you update to version 4.09 before testing your hard disk.

ok so my bro and i have decided that it must me the fat table that got fsked up so is there any program i can use to repair it or to manually access the info i need? also are there any programs that can rollback a format to what i had after i did the initial format which is most of the stuff that i had minus like 5-10GB which i can deal with i just want my stuff back
 
NEWS FLASH maybe this will help. Ok, so i got this program called Restorer 2000 i only got the demo cuz the proggy cost like $60 but i ran it and i got a whole bunch of errors that read "MFT Record Child's Claimed Parents Mismatch, aborting" so i guess something went wrong with the files so it showed that no one owned them and when XP tried to recover them something got fucked along the way so let me know if you can help me with it.



PS this proggy shows all my stuff on the drive just all out of order and i can't move it or anything.
 
for starters, is this an NTFS partition or a FAT32 partition

there are many recovery programs some better than Restorer 2000 (and cheaper to)
like File Scavenger

however, if there is a corruption problem
its likely to effect the rescue as well
either download the Ultimate Boot CD and run the diagnostic (older) for Maxtor
or
hook up a floppy disk drive and run powermax to see if you gat a HDD error
swap out the cables to a set of known good
and put the drive in a computer that is also known good (RAM IDE Channel and busmaster drivers)
if you then get the drive to pass the diagnostic you can either attempt to run a repair on the filesystem using diskpatch above, or use chkdsk if NTFS
or start rescue operations with Restorer 2000 or another ap
but you have to have somewhere to write that data to
if you have limited space to work with youll need to transfer to it, validate the data, and then burn it to media and repeat until you have recovered what can be recovered

but if you dont verify that its not a memory, power, busmatser, IDE channel, or cable issue
then whatever fubared the filesystem originally will likely do the same to the data your rescuing

and if you do eliminate those variables but the drive fails the diagnostic
its very much hit and miss,
 
i have changed ram used a promise card and also got a new mobo still no luck with chkdsk. how do i run filesystem repair i think that may fix my problem since it is an MFT error which is the NTFS filesystem right?

chkdsk /f :p

(sorry)

if you have eliminated the other possible causes of corruption its likely the drve itself
and its not going to "heal", so getting what you can off quickly through a direct scan of the sectors bypassing the MFT is likely a good idea (Restorer 200\File Scavenger) but the fact Restorer 2000 gave you that error isnt promising

It "should" automatically rebuild a corrupted MFT from its mirrorNTFS Master File Table (MFT)
