i have logitech 5300 5.1 speakers and an audigy 2 zs regular sound card and a samsung dvd rom. i can't get the dvd audio surround sound to work correctly. i've tried windvd and direct dvd software and changed the settings to 5.1 speakers and everything but it will only play stereo sound. the only way it will play in all speakers is if i set the sound card to cmss 3d or if i change the speakers to matrix mode and i thought those two options were only for changing stereo to 5.1, not dvds, since they're already supposed to be 5.1. if anyone could help me or tell me what i'm doing wrong that would be great. thanks.

edit: also on windvd i've done the 5.1 speaker test in the settings, and all the speakers work fine then, just not when the dvd is playing.

edit2: actually, cmss 3d doesn't affect the dvd at all; only matrix does. and some of the sounds are cut out when matrix is on, but there are still some on all the speakers. no sounds are cut off when it is off but the sounds are only on 2 speakers.

If you've got the audigy zs, there are 2 ways you can get 5.1 sound out of your speakers. You can have the audigy decode the signal or have winDVD do it. I'll let you know both.

First make sure your sound card and speakers are hooked up properly and that the audigy is set up for 5.1 speakers in the control panel. I think you've got this set right since you said it will matrix correctly.

To have windvd decode the signal, go to the audio tab under "configuration". Make sure it's set to analog sound card and 5.1 speakers. By default it's set to 2.1 speakers, so you might not have changed it yet. Also, disable any upmixing settings in winDVD.

To have the audigy decode, again under the audio settings, change it to SPDIF passthrough. By default, the audigy will decode now. If you've changed any settings you can change them back, IF you installed the AUDIOHQ panel from creative. Open that up and click on "device controls". Go to the "decoder" tab and "Use installed decoder" should be selected for your setup.

Hope one of those works.

thanks for the help but it didn't work :(.on my windvd, a lot of those options you were talking about weren't there. i have version 5. i installed powerdvd 5 and selected the 6 speaker option but that didn't help. it only plays the front 3 speakers, not the back ones. i messed around with the settings and nothing fixed it. the matrix mode still makes the back ones play but cuts out certain sounds like talking on all the speakers. i went to the audigy control panel and selected it to decode and also tried it without it decoding but none of that made the rear speakers work. any more ideas?

First off......you havent mentioned at all about going into the Control panel /sound icon and setting the speakers to 5.1.....DUH....so if you havent...that's half the battle right there....lol.......NEXT

if you want sound you of course have to have the sound card connected to the DVD player you use.....with either of 2 connectors.....the regular audio plug-in for analog........or a SPDIF connector for digital.Depending on what your unit has and what you want......there has to be a connector from youre sound card to that unit....or no go.
Then since you have a AUD ZS card it's a darn good idea to have the speakers calibrated and IN PHASE which means the wires plugged in positive/positive and negative/negative.....just don't plug the speakers in by not looking.
As far as youre DVD software is concerned...read the help files for em...they explain exactly what to do to set those up for 5.1 sound....
