Need help for a supermicro case

Hello everyone,

I'm reading this forum since a lomg time and it helped me chose a lot of my PCs. Today, I decided that I'm joining you in the fileserver fun.

I've read a lot of post talking about norco vs. Supermicro and from what I understand, in the long run Supermicro is a good choice, so my choice is made. English is not my first language, so don't be shy to ask for some clarifications.

-I will use it in my home only with 2 computers sharing files, sometimes streaming to the Ipad and a TV;

-I DON'T need 24 HDD. 8-16 3.5'' will be enough but it has to be rackmount;

-I DON'T want a >1000$ case;

-I will buy a supermicro board

-Raid is a tricky question. I use WHS v1 pool with duplication. I like it very much. DE is not in v2 and and would like to have a full replication somehow. Hardware or software raid 10. I saw ZFS too. Not sure if it's useful information to choose a case.

-Redondant power supply is a nice thing but not mandatory.

-DVD-Drive or not, I don't know. Never had a case without it and how do you install the OS if you don't have one.

-SAS is new to me but I read about it. I will buy 3.5 SATA3 drive.

-I looked at the Supermicro website, it's confusing with all the models. This is what I found so far.

Just to be clear, that chassis will be very loud. If you look at the redundant PSUs those are very small fans which need to spin fast to keep the power supplies cool.

You have selected a case for a special UIO mainboard (see horizontal slots for
expansion cards). a standard model is more like a

to compare the cases, look at:
- power supply (mostly redundant)
- slots for disks (you need SAS/SATA)
- slots for expansion cards (horizontal/UIO or standard)
- extender included (you do not need with 12 disk slots,
where you can use a mainboard with one 8x SAS/SATA controller + 6 onboard SATA)


but be prepared, they are for a serverroom, incredible loud
and there is no room for a optical drive for OS-install
(must use a SATA DVD, connect it, install OS and remove it)

If you buy a SuperMicro board, use one with onboard SAS/Sata controller
best with SAS2 (LSI 2008 chipset) to support disks > 2 TB
The SAS1 ones are limited to 2 TB but there are relativ cheap options like

and use always the ...-F models with IPMI with complete remote management

Thank you both for your answer.

I've read a lot about Norco vs Supermicro and how in the end supermicro is better, but it seems that there is not a lot of choices with Supermicro.

This will be in the basement but I can't have a super loud system either. Having a slim DVD is also a must.

I can't find a +- 12 drives case, no redondant power supply for less noise and a slim DVD

1) I am using this case with my X8SIL-O-F and a IBM M1015 sas expander- supporting 14 hard drives ( 2 ghetto rigged inside, 12 via the bays.) Even the plastic air direction piece fits perfect.
2) ESXi and Opensolaris works perfect.
3) Buy a external USB cdrom drive for $40 and forget about the cdrom requirement.
4) It is honestly not that loud, even with stock fans. Very quite comaired to some of my 1u and 4u boxes. The fans can easily be replaced with 80mm panaflo L1A if you are that worried.
