I really dont know if this is the right place to post this so move if it in the wrong place.

Ok, so I have a computer and it wont turn on after a thunderstrom. So im guessing it got hit by lighting(dunno its on a surge protector). So open it up thinking maybe it power supply but when I open it up, the lights on the motherboard are on.So what could be the problem?

I plan on changing the power supply, im thinking that could be it but is there anything else it could be, like maybe the switch that turns it on got messed up?Really, I dont im just looking for other problems that it could be.

well, after a thunderstorm if your computer doesn't turn on it's extremely difficult to tell which component has gone bust.

when you say 'the lights on the motherboard are on,' do you mean that when you push the power button the fans spin up, and the motherboard is clearly getting power?

to be totally honest with you, it may take a fair amount of swapping parts to find out what has happened. start off by trading out the PSU for one you know that works; it doesn't have to be powerful enough to run the whole system, just the bare essentials.

I had one get hit by lightning fairly recently. I thought my power supply got toasted, so I bought a new one. It still didn't boot up. My suggestion: Don't buy anything until you know for sure what went bad. Find a friend who has a computer with parts you can swap out with yours to check each component.

The fan doesnt start cause the computer doesnt start, but a red light on the motherboard was lit up, so im guessing that it the motherboard getting power, so I think the motherboard is fine. I plan on switching the PSU tommorrow though. So I guess that will be the frist step. Could there be a problem with the power button?

Do you mean on the case? I suppose anything is possible....try jumping the PSU when it's not plugged into the motherboard.

I have old comps that aren't used I can use to change parts with.

Yea, the power button on the case.

well just because the red light is on doesn't mean the motherboard is fine...just that it's plugged in i think =).

When you say your computer won't turn on you mean that when you press the power button nothing happens right? Not that it won't post/get to windows?

If that's the case I think it could really only be your PSU or your motherboard (or the power button i guess, though unlikely).

Yea it just wont turn on, im thinking its the PSU too, im just wanting to know all the possibly problems there could be, cause Ive never had this problem before.Ill start working on it tommorrow I post and say what happen, but you guys have been very helpful. Thanks

I worked on a computer awhile back that got hit on a surge. Hit the power button and nothing. It turned out that the modem (they used dial-up) got fried and that was it. If the modem was installed it wouldn't boot, if it wasn't it booted fine.

First thing I would do would be to unplug the PSU from everything, jump it and check it with a DMM. If all of the voltages checked out okay I'd then try to boot with just the cpu, ram and video card installed. Take it down to as few parts as possible to narrow down just what is and isn't good.

Well, put the PSU into another system and it turned on so its fine I really didnt have alot of time to look in to it today but from the looks of it im gonna need to buy a new motherboard.

no beeps or anything? is the speaker plugged in any post beeps might help you out. have you tried to clear cmos, theres so many things that could be wrong id try to t/s b4 you start throwing new parts at it.

No the computer wont even turn on, so it cant beep. I pretty sure the motherboard is fryed but im gonna test all the parts to make sure theres no other other things in need to get.

I didnt read if you unplugged everything not necessary to boot.
Its worth a try as modems and network cards are often on the receiving end of lightning strikes.
I lost a modem to lightning which prevented my PC from turning on.

Well I had a internet going though my ethernet port on my motherboard so that is more that its likely the casue.
