So I've got 4 Samsung 2TB drives I've been running in R10 on my P67's onboard intel controller. R10 because I found out using the onboard R5 was absolutely freaking HORRIBLE. Write speeds were in the toilet. We're talking 1/5 - 1/6 of single drive write performance, which I quickly found was the norm for intel's onboard R5 offerings.

Anyway, Do I need to spend $350-$400 for an Areca or can I spend $200-$250? If I need an Areca, which one? How loud is the damn fan on the Areca?

Has anybody used on the of these intel units? Would I be in the exact same boat, write-performance wise?

Thanks and help - I'm outa space and need to use my 4 2TB drives in R5!

Make absolute sure you get a card with a BBU or you understand the risks of not using one. Otherwise write performance will suffer in the safe mode (write through).

You shouldn't have had the problem you describe with Intel RAID5. If you just need alright performance then you could try some kind of software RAID5 (or 4).
