Need Help Fellow Folders!!

Hey guys,

I am trying to get this quad core box up running for my dad (and for us!) and have a crappy issue..Everytime I try to install WinXP Pro, it errors out when copying Driver.CAB..

I have replaced everything, and after using 3 different DVD drives I realized there is a small yet deep mark on the disc that I think my daughter's stupid cat did..I took it to a local video shop and paid 3 bucks for them to use their "magic machine" which did nothing to fix the issue...

So, here is what I need..I need a copy, either burned or .ISO that is safe, of WinXP Pro full version..Let me be clear..I AM NOT asking for an activation key..I have a fully legit Volume License Key of my own, which is why I am installing XP in the first place..If someone can help me out, I will paypal you $10 for your time.

Maybe someone can clarify on the legality of downloading an iso and using your own key, but I'd hate to hear the answer as I've done that before...

Since I'm not buying the software I don't see why it matters..but then again, I'm not an attorney either..

I'll happily prove to a MOD that I am a legit owner if need be..

I can't remember the website, but there are legit ISOs out there for download. Google it up. The website I am talking about isn't warez.

The way that understand it is that you are paying for the license so you should be able to use any CD that will work with your key. It wouldn't be any different from using an image for multiple PCs but using a different key for each.

-made a duplicate copy of that same disc that also fails?
-extracted the files off that disc and burned a new copy with a new driver.cab file?

I would try both of those (off the top of my head).
Depending on how bad the scratch is, you may still be able to read the disc to make a working copy, or at least extract everything else, then find a good copy of that cab file, burn a new master and then try off of it.

Worst case hit up one of those rent sites, get an iso, burn it and use your product key.

I tried to rip a an .iso image of my disc thinking that I could burn a new one but everytime it encounters the driver.cab it imgburn encounters an unexpected read error...

I am just going to cross my fingers and hope I can find a clean .iso off a 'rent site..

That's what we did for Office 2000 at my old job. We had one or two copies of media that we paid our reseller something like $5 for. Everytime we purchased a new pc, I'd just buy another license through our reseller and they would add another license to the account. The the same key was reused, but eopen showed how many licenses we had purchased.

I'll say I have no original discs for XP lol, I just "found" the image and still use my old keys. My discs were scratched out years ago lol
helps that I got mass use licenses, I've got a friend in the local uni's computer department, head of sales and asst in campus side faculty services

I've got some old student disks laying around that I will probably never use, if you think that they will work with your key I could send you one.

most likely because your key is for xp pro SP2.. unless its really old then its an sp1 key which then you have to install the same corresponding version for it then update to sp3 after everything is running.. its a pain in the ass.. but if you still need a copy of xp pro sp2 im sure i have a copy of my old xp sp2 disc laying around (i suck at remembering where shit is so i had at one time about 15 copies of my xp disc).. i just have to go through all my boxes since i just moved the other week..

QFT and I can speak from experience on this BS.
I've had this happen several times before, a key won't work on a slipstreamed XP SP3 install disc but it works fine on an XP SP2 disc (which then updates just fine to SP3). MS really borked something with the SP3 slipstream process and keys IME.

My key is indeed for SP2, as that came already bundled on the disc..My disc's came from my school and never prompt for activation, so I assume it's like a VL key?

if the only file that is unreadable is that CAB file, i could zip it and send it to you, then you can just make an ISO with all the files together and burn it. can you read the filesize or hash value or version of that file?

an alternative would be to look up on microsoft's website what the MD5 hash of the disk image should be, then go look around online for a copy with the same hash and download it. as long as the hashes match, there should be no alterations (like bundled viruses/malware) to the files.

You would think that, but no it actually doesn't matter.
Here's what I've experienced - I have a XP Pro SP2 slipstream disc with a working key. Before SP3, I used that disc with that key and it was just fine, no problems. After SP3 came out, I made a new slipstream disc by extracting the disc data and adding in the SP3 pack (using the guide from Paul Thurrott's site), same way I did it when I made a SP2 slipstream disc.

The SP3 disc does not work with my key. It makes 0 sense, but it doesn't, I have no idea why. It could be something to do with VLK's, I don't know. (My key is a VLK.)
The original XP Pro, SP1 slipstream and SP2 slipstream discs all worked fine with my key, the same key. But the SP3 slipstreamed disc would not install with the same key, it would report that it was not a valid key (which is BS). (obviously my slipstream discs are copies, made from extracting the original install disc boot partition, install data, and injecting the SP.exe through the command line)

Again though - I can install off the SP2 disc with my key, pass WGA, update to SP3 and have 0 issues, just fine though. But for some reason, trying to use the SP3 slipstream install disc is a no go.

I've found no reason why and no answers as to why, but I can definitely corroborate that in some cases, this does happen, for whatever reason. Probably a case of Microsoft trying to lay a banhammer on certain keys that are legal, legit keys - but who knows.

I was able to work around it by grabbing an .iso of XPSP2, so there might be some truth to the SP3 thing..

As I elaborated above - there's something definitely fishy with SP3 and not accepting some keys for whatever reason, but anyway it's good that you're finally up and running again.

um yeah service packs effect your keys.. microsoft changes the keys depending on if its sold for xp sp1 xp sp2 or xp sp3.. i know i've tested it.. i have a key for each version.. doesnt matter if its a VLK key it should still work on the retail copy to at least install.. now will it pass the WGA test i have no clue but thats always fixable.. its a bullshit thing microsoft pulled because i ran into this problem with my old dell laptop.. came with an xp sp1 key but they sent an xp sp2 install cd with it.. and well guess what.. 6 months later when i had to change a hard drive and reinstall windows using the disc they sent.. it of course didnt work..

Nope, it's a legit, non-BL key. First time I've had troubles with a corp VLK.
