I have to order this in 30 min so, please answer quickly. Whats a good HSF for overclocking a P4 2.6c with socket 478? Thanks. Cant be too expensive (under 50)
 
Zalman 7000cu or SP-947 (I think that's it...from Thermalright or Thermaltake...one of the two...it's a big honkin' copper heatpipe cooler...but doesn't come w/fan).

or if you want to get more ambitous...you can look for the Thermaltake 120.
 
the zalman 7000cu is good for overclocking? I hope to get more than the stock cooling 260 mhz over my stock speeds. I wanna get to 3.2 ghz or 3.3 ghz, I know i can, i just need better cooling. So 7000cu is good for OCing?
EDIT: also whats better, copper or aluminum?
 
copper transfers heat between materials more efficiently...however, aluminum is more efficient at transfering the heat to the surrounding air. That's why you see so many heatsinks with a copper base and aluminum fins.

as long as you have a fan on it...there shouldn't be any worries no matter what material it is.
 
you'll see less than a 3-5 degree difference between the two. With the advantage leaning toward the all copper. However, some people see no difference between the two at all. Do be aware though, that the all copper is significantly heavier than the aluminum/copper version.

chances are you'll be pleased with either one. but for the little difference, I'd go for the all copper.

Well i go to LAN tourneys alot, so would the copper be too heavy to lug around? I dont want it to snap off my mobo... :( ... also, would the aluminum/copper combo difference of 3-5 degrees be significant while overclocking? Or would the difference be small, say between an overclock of 235 fsb over the copper's 240? Or would there be a much bigger diff?

Copper over aluminum, you will see a SIGNIFICANT difference in temperatures. And yes, it could be crucial in your target OC. Don't worry about a SP-94 (copper) breaking your board. They are quite resiliant and the attachment plate does well to distribute the load and make everything safe....as long as you don't use your system as a shot-put.
 
thanks anyways dave_graham but I have to buy everything from newegg, the fan im tossing in as a reward for myself for building my parents new comp

Well i would be going with a zalman 7000 copper, if that makes a difference compared to the sp94? (only asking cuz im wondering if theres a weight diff between the 2)

Well damn i already bought the Zalman, had no time, i had to go and buy it then and there. Oh well, shouldnt be TOO much of a difference, i got the Zalman 7000 copper
