need help enabling crossfire

After some price drops, I decided to get another card and try Crossfire.

Installed the card, plugged in the power connectors and fired up the computer. Driver was updated automatically and I open CCC to enable Crossfire. There are no options available. I click on Graphics>Information Center>Graphics Hardware and all the information is identical except that 1) the primary adapter is listed with a Maximum Bus Setting of x1 (instead of x8) and 2) the secondary adapter is listed as disabled.

I checked online and looked for answers but didn't find anything that seemed to fit. Apparently there is supposed to be a CrossfireX tab under the Graphics tab to set Crossfire, but it's not there.

The only troubleshooting I've done is swapping the bridge from one slot to another. Any further help would be appreciated.

It should look like that. Do the cards work individually? What cards and what are the specs of the rest of your system?
 
It looks just like the image sans the CrossFireX option.

The system:

2 x 5870
Asus M4A79XTD EVO motherboard that should be able to run at x8/x8
PII X4 965 - not currently overclocked
8GB DDR 1333 RAM
Corsair 750HX PSU - It's modular, so I made sure I plugged in the extra cable securely to the PSU.
A bunch of hard drives and a DVD burner.

I'll try the new card by itself and see what I get.

UPDATE- new card works fine and the graphics hardware tab says it's running at x16 as the only card.

Did you check the crossfire bridge (if faulty) or try with two? :)

Did you make a complete uninstall/reinstall of drivers?
 
I had the same issue and what fixed it was seperate updating of the drivers or using driver sweeper so that both cards are using the same 'version' drivers. If you look at gpu-z you can see if this is what is causing the issue. As I said, it was the same for me.
 
GPU-Z says that both cards are running driver version 8.791.0.0 (Catalyst 10.11).

Also, instead of the cards running at x1/x8 the cards are running at x8/x1. Although both should be running at x8.
 
Okay, I used driver sweeper and reinstalled the latest drivers from the AMD website (although they are 10.10 drivers and not 10.11 drivers). Situation still the same - no Crossfire. I updated the BIOS on the motherboard and that didn't fix the problem, either.

I'm at a loss for what to do now (aside from returning the card). I can see why people play consoles or just stick with a single card solution.
 
How many xfire bridges do you have? Have you tried different combinations of 1 bridge, 2 bridge, etc.?
 
I've tried both bridges I have together and separately and there is no change.

Is there some setting in the BIOS I can change to get it to work? I didn't see anything that looked promising when I went looking around.

Searching the AMD support forums yields lots of people with similar problems but no definite solution (other than: it's been discussed lots of times; use the search function)
 
try installing 1 card , then adding the second card and installing it. I have had issues on a 5870 CF rig that would not enable CF if i tried installing the driver while both cards where present.
 
The motherboard has 2 x16 pci-e slots. I put one video card in the second slot and nothing in the first slot. Rebooted the computer and it is only running at x1. I'm guessing this isn't normal. When there is only one card in the first slot it runs at x16. Could there be some motherboard setting that I need to alter or maybe the board is broken?
 
Swap out the Crossfire bridge for the other one that came with the other card.

I already did that. I think that if the bridge wasn't in that CCC will give you an error message telling you about it.
 
Regardless of x1 or x16, it should give you the xfire option.

If you still have your motherboard manual, poke through it and read the crossfire section if it has one. The fact that it reads x1 is indeed strange. I'd either post on Asus tech support (they actually have really nice support forums) or ask in the mobo forum.

The manual was within arms reach and it has a Crossfire section at the back. It says to uninstall the drivers, turn off the computer, install the new card, turn on the computer, and reinstall the drivers. I did that and the problem is still the same.

I haven't had this much trouble installing computer hardware since I had to play with IRQs with my SoundBlaster 18 years ago.
 
i have heard that in order for crossfire to successfully work you need at least a x4 slot. I think that x1 slot is coking the bandwidth and causing it not to function.

should work to enable crossfire.
1x dosnt matter due to enable isnt about bandwidth..

I would ask the motherboard manufacturer about it.
