Well back in November I posted with a problem regarding my X1950pro. I ended up returning it to Newegg and replacing it with a 1950xt since all the 1950pros were gone.

Everything has been peachy with the xt, until last night. I was merging all my old email to my new pc, installed outlook express to convert the emails for outlook 2003, etc. After i got the mail transferred and my accounts setup, I decide its not too late, how bout a little gaming before bed.

Fire up FEAR, and i get hit with a black screen. I waited, tried alt-tabbing, Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing, ended up resetting the pc. Rebooted, and decided to try and reconfigure FEAR. Same thing.

I know Half Life 2 runs like butter at any setting, so i tried that. As soon as I get to the main loading screen, I am greeted by what looks like artifacting, shimmering pixels all over the loading screen. ATI utilities kicks me back to windows saying the drivers are not responding, etc.

By now it was getting late and I was getting frustrated, so off to bed.

This afternoon, I get back to the computer and try updating drivers, uninstalling all ATI utilities, and reinstalling the latest ones. Tried DirectX in case that might be it. I even went as far as a system restore to a week ago, no luck. The most recent time I have tried running HL2, the computer rebooted and said windows has recovered from a serious error, and got a stop message of: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

As of right now, everything runs fine, images, audio, videos, but no games.

I am out of ideas aside from the "kick it till it works" method.

I would greatly appreciate any help from you guys, and apologize for the lengthy post.

Have you done anything to the card? Overclock? Remove/replace heatsink?

Sounds like severe overheating to me..

Sorry, I forgot to mention it in my post, I have not overclocked anything on the PC, only changed my memory timings.

My temps, according to ATI traytools, the highest temp I have seen while gaming has been around 70*C, and normally it hovers around 42*C.

Just a little update, between uninstalling and installing verious drivers, I was able to run FEAR and HL2 last night. I have no idea what was causing it.

However, this afternoon, it is back, no game will load, I get either a blank screen with the power light on the monitor flashing, or a garbled loading screen.

Upon two tries of HL2, I recieved the following images. I had to use my camera since it wouldn't let me grab a screenshot.

I would appreciate any insight anyone has.

Maybe it's time to RMA this one too.

That sounds like the next step.

BTW, it's possible that it's a RAM chip overheating or malfunctioning in some way. Just because the core temperature is fine doesn't mean the RAM chips are all fine temperature wise.

uninstall all display drivers, reboot and install newest catalyst drivers and try again

This is driving me crazy!

I took your advice, kumquat, and tested for temps, I turned my fan speed up to 100% with ati traytools, it it brought temps down to 38*C.

I loaded HL2, and it started up fine and ran normally.

Next step, try a hot card. I set fan control back to auto, and loaded one of the OpenGL screensavers since they tend to warm things up. With some high settings on the Lattice screensaver, I was able to get my temps up to 81*C. After it was nice and toasty, I tried loading up HL2, and it loaded up just fine.

I have uninstalled all drivers and ATI software, and tried installing both the new drivers and the older ones that came with the card. Not at the same time of course.

This bug seems to be random, or maybe it just pops up upon initial boot.

-turn off all overclocking
-Try reinstalling the motherboard's chip set drivers.
-Reseat your RAM sticks
-reseat the display card
