Ok so i've come across a dell laptop hardrive its a Hitachi Travelstar - 60GB, 5400RPM, 8MB, etc laptop drive. Accept when I hook it up to boot it gives me this grey screen dell.com need hard-drive password etc.. is there anyway to get rid of this? This is a perfectly good laptop hardrive. I'm not able to reformat this on my laptop, also i found some software HDD unlocking wizard but it doesnt support USB or Firewire connections which is what i used to connect it to my main PC.
 
The software wizard doesn't work in 90% of situations. But if you want to give it a try, buy a 2.5"->3.5" adapter from newegg.com and put the drive on internal IDE.
When that doesn't work, google for one of the companys that will do it for you at a cost of $80-100.

ah, i was not aware that this "password" was implemented in hardware.
 
Theres no way to get that password off without knowing it, or using the special equipment. Have a lot of laptop drives here at work with passwords, we're looking into buying the equipment to repair drives that will also wipe the passwords, it runs to the tune of 3-5 thousand bucks. Best bet is to either send it to someone who can do it, or get a new drive.
