Can you get EVDO or ideally 3G signal where you live? Coming from a guy who put up with satellite for two years, I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone. Tried 'em both. WildBlue skews their usage meters and Hughes would just drop for random periods of time and then put you in the "restricted" bracket (decreased speeds if you go over your cap) even if you haven't used the connection all day.

For 6 months we had an Alltel EVDO connection coming from a card they offer plugged into a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 (specifically designed for mobile broadband cards). Reasonable speeds and allowed me to game competitively. We were grandfathered in to a no bandwidth cap contract but I think Verizon (recently purchased Alltel) has one, although it's higher than satellite's for sure.
