need help deciding on speakers

I just recently bought a Powerbook and am now in the market for speakers to enhance the audio from these crappy notebook speakers. I've been looking around and I don't really want to spend more than $100, and haven't decided if i want a 2 speaker system or a 2.1. All i know is I want them to sound good for the money, and obviously better than these notebook speakers.

i've been looking at:
Altec Lansing XT1 (portability isn't really an issue, but the aesthetics are good)

Altec Lansing vs 3121

Logitech X-530 (although I don't realt need 5 speakers, almost overkill for me)

Any other suggestions or opinions would be helpful. Thanks.
 
Cough up another 50 bucks and get Klispch 2.1's. Also consider good headphones.. HD555 will sound better then those klispch speakers. at about 100 bucks. Though make sure you test your notebooks line out to make sure it's decent, alot of notebooks are notorious for noisy line outs.. if that is the case then you won't want headphones as they will be to annoying to wear. Unless you get a dac or somthing but then your talking about alot more money. For price/performance though you simply cannot beat headphones.. there's not a 200$ multimedia speaker out there that will beat a pair of 555's.

Edit: Definatly do not even look at 5.1/4.1's below 100 bucks, they are crap for sure.
 
thanks for the input. i know i definately don't want headphones though. something weird about having them on everytime i want to listen to music or watch a movie.
 
I had the altec lansing vs4121 for a year. Not a bad set of speakers for the price.
 
wow u say logitech's ones > the Klipsch

Well I'm not just talking out my ass. Ive owned the Klipsch 2.1's and I now own the z-2300s. The sub has much better impact, plus you dont have to get behind the sub to turn the speakers off. Obviously those arent the ONLY things that are better, the z-2300's really do sound great. . . theyve brought a smile to my face on many occasions.

edit: i forgot to mention... theyre pretty damn cheap now too. But I wouldnt let the price fool you.
 
what about the altec lansing mx5201's? i've heard those are pretty good. are the logitechs better than those, too?
 
yeah the mx5021 would probably sound the best, but the sub is a lil weak
 
has anyone even tried the altec lansing XT1, or known anyone who has? i'm curious as to how they sound. i wish i could listen to them all before i bought them.
