Need help deciding between a couple display options

Hey everyone, I'm new here and I just got back into PCs after many years of owning only a laptop so I'll need a bit of help with this one. I have to make a decision within a day or two if I want to keep all my options open. And I don't want anything other than an IPS 24"+ 16:10 under $400! Here they are: (all prices in Canadian dollars)


-Dell Ultrasharp 2412m - $299 brand new ($346.07 with tax and enviromental fee)

-HP 24" IPS-LCD Monitor (LP2475W) - $300 (Used on craigslist. Near-mint. Can't view until after July 12th. ~1.5 years left on warranty)

-Asus PA246Q - $250 (Used on craigslist. Experiencing green stuck pixel. Apparently these monitors are plagued with this problem but possibly fixable with a pixel massage.Pixel is located 3 inches from the right and about 1 inch from the bottom.


I don't want to pass up the deal on the Dell as their warranty and quality is awesome so that's the way I'm leaning. I will mostly be using it for web-surfing, light gaming, the occasional movie, and lots of music production.

The nec ea244wmi is better than all of those as is the Samsung s24a850 and neither use a grainy matte coating while the models you selected do.
 
Both those monitors look nice but they are $100-$150 more after tax and shipping. Is it really worth the extra cost? I'm no artist or graphic designer. I have better than 20:20 vision but I do suffer from mild red-green colour blindness. Just want something crisp, spacious, reliable, and with a good response time.
 
If you want a crisp display then they are definitely worth it.

The HP just plain old sucks compared to what is available now, only the Dell is decent but it's really grainy and they can to vary a lot in terms of black levels between the same units.

The Samsung does not use LED PWM Dimming which can cause eyestrain and/or headaches.
 
Hmm thanks for your help! I think I'll order the Dell first and try it out. If I'm not satisfied with it I'll just return it and upgrade to the NEC.
 
As stated, the AG coating is rather heavy on the 2412. I found it unusable myself (text hurt my eyes on light colored screens). And even if you are okay with it, I think most would prefer a lighter coating. Are you using it in a super bright cubicle or right next to a window or something? Otherwise, I see no point to getting something like this.

I suggest just paying the extra $100 and get the NEC instead. Your eyeballs may thank you.
 
Well I still have some options. I found a thread on this site detailing how to easily remove the AG coating off a Dell U2412 so if I find the glare is too much then I'll either return it and try out the NEC or attempt to remove the coating. Maybe there's even after-market AG coatings available?

I will be moving soon into a new place that has a ton of direct natural light aiming right where my desk will be set up and I'd hate to have to block out all the light like some kind of vampire. I'll post back what my thoughts are in awhile once I've had some time in my new place with it.
 
Based on what I have seen, I wouldn't exactly classify removing the coating as being easy. You also run the risk of completely ruining your monitor (and voiding the warranty too).

Even if it worked, you won't have any AG coating at all, so you will have gone from one extreme to the other.

If you are willing to play the return game, a better solution may be to buy both the Dell and NEC ... compare them both side by side, and then simply return the one you don't like.
 
Hmm comparing the side by side would be awesome. I could try them both out in different rooms and really get a feel for them. Do you know of a Canadian retailer selling the NEC that has a good return policy? I only have enough money to buy one display, and the NEC is a little more after tax than I was looking to spend. If I know I'll be eligible for a full refund then I can just pay with my VISA instead.
 
Yeah, that is the tricky part with that NEC. It is a pain to find (or at least was, last time I checked). I don't know Canadian retailers, but I think NCX does.
 
There's one for sale at PC-Canada. They have a pretty strict return policy that only applies to defective units though :(. 20% restocking fee too. It would cost just over $100 more than the Dell.

NCIX has one for sale as well. I can probably get it price matched too! There's a store walking distance from my house too so shipping would be free. They do however have a %15 restocking fee on all non-defective orders. Not sure if the %15 applies to just the sale price or with all the enviromental fees and taxes too. It'll be about $60 to send it back.
 
NCIX also says in the specs that the NEC display has speakers...is that true because that would be awesome, even if they sound like crap.
 
Yeah, I think it comes with speakers. But I also expect an external $20 pair of speakers to sound better.
