We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.

I have a home network with 1 pc and other various wireless devices connected. I recently got a new laptop and have gotten it to connect to the internet but when I open "my network" on my pc, the laptop icon doesn't show up. Yet, when I open my laptop "my network" connection, the pc icon does show up. I'm also unable to transfer files between the two. Can anyone suggest the first thing I should check?

What OSes are you using. Do you have any software firewalls turned on. Have you connected just through the "My Network" Screen or have you tried connecting through UNC to try file sharing. Do both computers have password protected accounts?

There is more information needed to solve your problem.

I went ahead and took the passwords off of each computer to start with. I've since got it figured out and got my laptop connected to my home network. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll post back if I run into any other problems.
BTW, not sure how to ask this, but if I do have passwords on both computers, how do I go about making each "recognizable" on the network?
Oh, and I have W7 on laptop and Vista on the pc. I connected them thru "my network". Not exactly sure what "UNC" is.

Firstly for 7 and for vista you need accounts that have passwords.

Secondly make sure that on both 7 and vista the network type is set to home or work (basically privet). Make sure that sharing is turned on in both places as well as network discovery in both places.

There is a chance that you aren't seeing the other computer because of a DNS issue but this is unlikely.

Also make sure that the windows firewall is turned off. This causes almost every network related issue I have ever seen with windows.

And finally try connecting to \\laptop.1's.ip.address and see if that works. If it does and the computers are still not showing up in the "My network" window then you have most likely a DNS issue. To get around this just map drives with the UNC path pointing at the IP address.

Also make sure that the windows firewall is turned off. This causes almost every network related issue I have ever seen with windows.

There is no need to turn off the firewall. the process of enabling file sharing and network discovery opens the ports in the firewall that are needed automatically, if you have set the network type for your home network connection to anything other than public.

Just a little note- I was using the UNC. I guess I just didn't know that's what it was called. I do have the \\computer\laptop..etc. showing in my network. So far everything's still working fine. I actually had to go into my internet security and set things up. I guess I thought I already had.
